There is something so optimistic about gingham, the checked cotton fabric popularized by '50s and '60s style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot, who wore it in the form of cropped pants and skirts. The preppy print made a comeback on the runways in September thanks to designers like Altuzarra, Diane von Furstenberg and Oscar de la Renta, who all played on its nostalgia-inducing elements and brought it into the modern day with sleek silhouettes and darker color choices. It's a major street style trend too, usually in the form of matching separates like a full gingham suit, and almost always in black and white.

The nice thing about gingham is that it's so easy to wear, and can lend a bit of ladylike polish even on the hottest days of the year. We like it in a loose-fitting or short, breezy dress; in a full skirt or trousers with a simple, cropped top; or as a single separate paired with other summery fabrics, such as lightweight denim and white cotton. Feeling bold? Pair a matching top and bottom for statement-making spring look.
