With so many talented minimalist designers in the industry right now, there's no shortage of understated-yet-elegant gowns for famous ladies (and their stylists) to choose from when preparing for a red carpet event. Calvin Klein, The Row, Ralph Lauren and Victoria Beckham all make unfussy, embellishment-free dresses that make for a perfectly chic public appearance.

But this week's best dressed ladies seemed intent on making a case for long gowns with a lot going on: Alexa Chung in a Valentino number canvassed in floral embroidery, Rooney Mara in an Alexander McQueen dress covered from top to bottom in ruffles, Olivia Wilde in a Rosie Assoulin dress with a red flower petal-shaped bodice, and Diane Kruger in a bold blue gown with harness detail. A shout-out also goes to the adorable Rachel Bilson, who made a rare red carpet appearance in a bubbly pink floral-printed Jonathan Saunders frock.

See all that and the rest of the week's best dressed in the gallery below.
