In the past few months, a lot of Powerful Womanhood magic has settled around Carey Mulligan's public image. She created and birthed a living human, and she's starring in the movie "Suffragette" with Meryl Streep. As though to seal the deal, she rolled up to the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards on Monday night wearing a powder blue Marc Jacobs pantsuit from spring 2016 that could only be more on point if Hillary Clinton had donned it for her presidential inauguration.

As is always the case with suits, the success lies in the tailoring. Jacobs, too, has found the perfect balance of strength, conservativeness and femininity here — with its sharp lapels and shoulders, tapered pants, nipped-in waist and cleavage-baring top (post-baby boobs are a true cause for celebration), this isn't a men's outfit adjusted for use by a woman. This is a suit made for a woman. Full stop.

While this would in all seriousness be a perfect look for Clinton's formal occasions, it's also a big leap forward for Mulligan, who consistently looks great but tends toward more understated dresses. This suit, on the other hand, demands the spotlight — be that on the campaign trail or the red carpet.
