After a quiet, slow summer spent with her rug rats at Amner Hall, Kate Middleton is back to her daily grind of handshakes and hair flips. On Tuesday, the Duchess of Cambridge fêted President Xi Jinping of China in full princess regalia, and on Wednesday, she wore Dolce & Gabbana to meet Jackie Chan. What a week.

The Duchess made her third public outing of the week on Friday to visit the Dundee Repertory Theatre in Scotland with Prince William — this time, trading glittering ball gowns and tiaras for a more casual belted coat dress. As is often the case with the Duchess, her sartorial choice was much more thoughtful than might initially meet the eye: The coat, in Scottish blue, was custom-made by famous Scottish designer Christopher Kane. She's a professional layer-wearer, too, pairing the coat with a black turtleneck, opaque tights and knee-high, heeled boots.

Middleton has long favored these Aquatalia Rhumba shoes for various occasions, and it's easy to see why: They're practical and wearable, yet have enough of a heel to dress things up. All things considered, I'd still love to see her in a more modern pair of heeled ankle boots once in a while, if only to spruce up her now-familiar winter wardrobe. With so many appearances in the pipeline, it certainly couldn't hurt for her to take a risk — even one as minor as switching up boot heights.
