Kurt Cobain's 'Unplugged' Sweater Sold for $137,500 at Auction

Kurt Cobain's 'Unplugged' Sweater Sold for $137,500 at Auction:

Julien's auction house in Beverly Hills, Calif., had a massive rock n' roll memorabilia sale on Saturday. Beatles instruments and paraphernalia got the most attention, including an acoustic guitar that had belonged to John Lennon, which sold for $2,410,000, and a lock of Lennon's hair, which sold for $25,000.

But beyond the instruments and, uh, hair, the auction racked up major bids for iconic items of clothing — most notably the green sweater worn by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana's appearance on "MTV Unplugged" in 1993. It sold on Saturday for a whopping $137,500. The vintage sweater, missing one button and featuring a large stain on the front left pocket, is one of Cobain's most recognizable pieces. Its chunky style epitomizes the grunge look Cobain and his bandmates popularized and continue to represent in modern culture — and has gone on to inspire runway collections, including Marc Jacobs' famous Perry Ellis spring 1993 collection and more recently, Hedi Slimane's spring 2016 menswear collection for Saint Laurent.

In addition to Cobain's sweater, the auction also saw the sale of a Christian Dior skirt suit worn by Madonna on the October 1996 issue of Vogue and in the movie "Evita" for $12,500, a black and white circle dress worn by Lady Gaga in London in 2011 for $13,750, and a pair of John Lennon's prescription gold-tone wire-rim glasses for $25,000.
