The Top 6 Chinese Models You Should Know

The Top 6 Chinese Models You Should Know:

Next week, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will pay homage to the Far East with the Costume Institute’s newest exhibition: China: Through the Looking Glass, which will explore the influence of Chinese art, film and aesthetics on international fashion designers. Of course, China has supplied the fashion world with more than just inspiration: An increasing number of today’s most sought-after models call the country home. With that in mind, we felt it time to take an in-depth look at six of the country’s most successful catwalkers, who continue to break barriers throughout the industry.  Get to know the runway power players here:

1. Liu Wen

Born in 1988, in Yongzhou, Hunan Province, Liu Wen has gone on to have unparalleled success in her field, with The New York Times naming her, “China’s first bona fide supermodel.” The phrase couldn’t be more fitting: Not only was she the first Chinese model to walk the runway in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, but she’s also the first China-born model to be named a face of Estée Lauder and to appear on Forbes magazine’s annual highest-paid models list beating the likes of Cara Delevingne and Alessandra Ambrosio. With 875,000 followers on Instagram and another nine million on the Chinese microblogging site, Weibo, it’s clear no matter how you crunch the numbers: Liu Wen is a force to be reckoned with from East to West.

2. Fei Fei Sun

With her enviable cheekbones and wide-set eyes, the classically beautiful Fei Fei Sun has become a regular both on the runway and in the pages of Vogue, where she appeared on the magazine’s cover this past September alongside her fellow Instagirls (yet another first for an Asian model). Hailing from Weifang, in Shangdong Province, the 26-year-old became the first Asian model to grace the cover of Italian Vogue in 2013, channeling Richard Avedon’s muse and fellow Chinese supermodl, China Machado, for the Steven Meisel-lensed spread.  She has since starred in campaigns for Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Chanel and Giorgio Armani Beauty among others.

3. Xiao Wen Ju

Hailing from the city of Xi’an in Shaanxi Province, Xiao Wen began modeling in 2010 after she entered a popular modeling competition.  After seeing an image of Xiao Wen online, IMG Models wasted no time in snapping her up. In 2012, she landed on New York’s runways and since then has walked for the likes of Louis Vuitton, Prada, Balenciaga, Chanel and Calvin Klein among others.  Her energy and playful personality has made her a prime target for ad campaigns — she’s appeared in ads for Chanel, Kenzo, Coach, DKNY and Dsquared most recently — and also earned her the title of muse/face/sometimes stylist of the New York-based clothing label Baby Ghost (which also just so happens to be her nickname).

4. Shu Pei Qin

Over the past five years, the 25-year-old from Kaifeng has used her razor-sharp cheekbones and captivatingly cute eyes to nab a Maybelline contract, a Gap campaign, and, most recently, tours down the fall runways for Altuzarra and Chanel. These days, Shu Pei splits her time between Shanghai and New York, where she continues to inspire street style photographers with her ‘contemporary chic’ aesthetic.

5. Ming Xi

In just a few short years, Ming Xi has gone from Shanghai native to one of the industry’s most in-demand Asian models.  After being hand-picked by creative director Riccardo Tisci to walk exclusively for Givenchy in Paris — a first for a Chinese model — the designer affirmed his adoration of Ming by choosing her as the face of the brand’s fall 2011 campaign.  Since then, she’s become a frequent fixture of both American and Chinese Vogue, and has walked the runway for Louis Vuitton, Lanvin, Michael Kors and Victoria’s Secret, earning her the title of the next great Chinese supermodel.

6. Du Juan

Born in Shanghai, Du Juan was studying ballet before entering in China’s Ford Supermodel Competition in 1999. After winning first place in the East China Region, she went on to win the Miss China contest in 2003. It wasn’t long before the industry started taking notice .  In 2005 she was one of five Chinese models picked to be on the cover of the first ever Vogue China issue, after which she promptly signed with IMG.  That same year, she scored the cover of French Vogue and remains, to this day, the first and only Asian model to have done so. In the years that followed, Du Juan scored campaigns with brands like Louis Vuitton, YSL, Roberto Cavalli and Gap before retiring in 2011 to focus on her burgeoning acting career.

Cara Delevingne and Pharrell Williams Reunite for Chanel’s Métiers D’art Campaign

Cara Delevingne and Pharrell Williams Reunite for Chanel’s Métiers D’art Campaign:

One could have only assumed, given the overwhelming amount fanfare surrounding Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel Métiers D’art Paris-Salzburg collection, that the accompanying ad campaign would be something equally as noteworthy.  After closing both the Austria and New York shows, it was almost guaranteed that Cara Delevingne would resume her rightful place in front of the Kaiser’s lens once again.  What we didn’t realize at the time however, was just how major her fellow co-star would be.

Teaming up for the third time under Chanel’s fantasy umbrella, Pharrell Williams joins the British supermodel for her third campaign with the brand — she’s previously appeared in ads for its F/W ’14 and Resort ’13 collections. Channeling the “Sound of Music” once again, Cara poses in a mix of cozy knits, tweed jackets and knee-high, bow-embellished shoes, while Pharell’s stands out in a pair of lace-up green boots worn over a classic pair of corduroys.  As for the campaign’s third  and arguably most adorable star, Hudson Kroenig, the pint-size model sports a pair of traditional lederhosen and one swoon-worthy Fair Isle sweater.

As you might recall, Cara and Pharrell previously teamed-up late last year for a short film called Reincarnation, released just before the Métiers D’art Paris-Salzburg show. The film is based on an anecdote about Coco Chanel meeting a young elevator operator at an opulent hotel in Salzburg and being inspired to create the famous Chanel jacket design. Pharrell played an elevator conductor to Cara’s beer maid in the seven minute video, which found the two escaping into an alternate reality.  But the duo looks thoroughly modern in the official ads.  See for yourself after the jump.

So You Think You Have What It Takes to be the Next Karlie Kloss?

So You Think You Have What It Takes to be the Next Karlie Kloss?:

These days, more and more designers appear to be skipping the traditional model casting calls in favor of scrolling through their Instagram feeds:  Marc by Marc Jacobs has now cast two of its campaigns with models found using the #CastMeMarc hashtag, DKNY followed a similar strategy when it came time to cast its Cara Delevingne for DKNY collection campaign, and MAC Cosmetics recently tapped six model hopefuls for its fall 2015 campaign under its “MACnificent Me” initiative.

Now, in an attempt to take its model search efforts to the next level, IMG — arguable the biggest modeling agency in the industry and operators of the popular model search Instagram account @weloveyourgenes — is joining forces with W magazine to launch its first-ever international model search contest, kicking off today.  Here’s how it works: by tagging your photos with #WmagModelSearch, you’ll be given the opportunity to have your photos reviewed by some of the industry’s top influencers including W‘s fashion and style director Edward Enninful, and legendary fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti, both of whom have worked with the likes of Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Karlie Kloss among others.

The winner of the model search will receive a trip to New York to appear in an upcoming issue of W, along with the chance to sign with IMG.  Participants will also be able to vote for their favorite runner-up with W‘s People’s Choice competition featured on Wmag.com.  The winner of this competition will have the chance to appear in a photo shoot on Wmag.com and will be featured on W‘s Instagram feed.

So, think you have what it takes to be the next Karlie Kloss? Then brush up on those selfie skills and get to snapping!

Warby Parker Raises $100 Million to Expand Store Network, Technology

Warby Parker Raises $100 Million to Expand Store Network, Technology:

No doubt about it, Warby Parker is one of the most successful companies to launch this decade, spawning dozens of copycats in the eyewear category and beyond. On Thursday, the five-year-old maker of $95 prescription eyeglasses announced that it has raised $100 million in a funding round led by T. Rowe Price, bringing the company's valuation to a reported $1.2 billion.

Wellington Management and Baillie Gifford, as well as existing investors Tiger Global and General Catalyst, also participated in the Series D round. The company has now raised $115 million from investors all together.

In a statement, Warby Parker said it plans to use the funds to fuel investment in technology and product development, as well as to expand its growing store network and mobile capabilities. The company, which currently employs about 500 people between its corporate offices and its stores, operates 12 brick-and-mortar locations in the U.S., where customers can schedule eye exams, try on glasses and place online orders for delivery in one to two weeks. The company plans to open eight more stores by the end of the year.

But the most exciting development may come from the technology end of the spectrum. Specifically, Warby Parker is looking to bring to market technology that would allow users to undergo an eye exam using only their mobile phones, a spokesperson said. That would be revolutionary indeed.

Tyler's Faux Crop Top Dress

Tyler's Faux Crop Top Dress:

I'm not afraid to wear a crop top — not after trying the trend for myself last spring, anyway. But sometimes, like during the hot summer months, you're in the mood for a shortcut to easy (read: one-piece) dressing.

Enter this dress by Asos. It has the appearance of being a crop top paired with a skirt thanks to a sheer panel, but has all the ease of throwing on a dress. I've worn the navy color to work with black flats, and because my mom taught me that if you love something you should buy it in every color, I also bought the pearl pink version to wear on weekends.

Can Celebrities Dress for the Chinese-Themed Met Gala Without Being Culturally Insensitive?

Can Celebrities Dress for the Chinese-Themed Met Gala Without Being Culturally Insensitive?:

On Monday, dozens upon dozens of celebrities and the designers who dress them will walk the red carpet into the Metropolitan Museum of Art to fete the opening of the Costume Institute's next exhibit, "China: Through the Looking Glass." The event — which this year counts Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Blake Lively, Anne Hathaway and Kim Kardashian among its hosts — is often referred to as “fashion’s biggest night," but many observers are wary to see how guests will interpret — or misinterpret — that theme.

In a Jezebel article headlined “2015 Met Gala Will Probably Be an Asian-Themed Shitshow,” Kara Brown writes, “The fact that the core idea behind the theme is how Chinese aesthetics have influenced other designers is troubling because that influence is often culturally insensitive or downright racist." She adds, “I simply do not trust the majority of Met Gala attendees to handle this theme with tact and respect." Over at Bustle, Maxine Builder echoed her concerns, writing, "To be culturally sensitive and to do this theme justice require an ability to take the time to understand the culture, and I’m concerned that no one will do that kind of research.”

When it comes to cultural appropriation and accidental racism, the fashion industry doesn’t have the best track record. Despite public backlash, Native American headdresses continue to be casually incorporated into runway shows and magazine editorials. Ditto the incorrect use of “Navajo print,” and impoverished black people as props in fashion shoots. Celebrities, such as those likely to attend Monday’s soiree, aren’t so good with this stuff either. See: Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” video, Katy Perry’s 2013 American Music Awards costume, and many of Miley Cyrus’s artistic decisions.

Oftentimes, those at fault defend such instances by saying they intended to celebrate the culture or class of people they imitated, an excuse we could easily see those involved with the Met Gala using. Add to that the fact that Met Gala attendees, while happy to take risks, often miss the mark when it comes to adhering to the theme — almost no one followed 2014’s white tie dress code and the fashion crowd’s interpretation of “punk” was very, very loose in 2013 — and you can see why there's general concern.

Are guests being set up for failure with this theme, or are there ways to attend this red carpet event, look amazing, and safely avoid offending anyone?

In some ways, it's the former. A Vogue article explaining the theme says the exhibit will look at “how eastward-looking Westerners have understood and misunderstood Chinese culture in an exchange that [Curator Andrew] Bolton likens to a complicated game of telephone.” While there are ways to convey that exchange respectfully in the context of a museum exhibition, interpreting that on the red carpet is inherently challenging. “The Met itself is acknowledging that these have often been inaccurate or even based on problematic racial stereotypes such as the 'dragon lady' or 'China doll' tropes. If a designer draws inspiration from these tired stereotypes, they won’t just look racially insensitive, they’ll also come across as incredibly uncreative,” says Liz Flora, editor in chief of Jing Daily, who notes in a recent op-ed that luxury brands also risk alienating the Chinese shoppers who make up a significant portion of their customer bases.

“The gala is potentially more of a minefield because it doesn’t come with notes on each outfit, no card explaining what the designer’s intention was,” says Susan Scafidi, Fordham Law professor and author of “Who Owns Culture?: Appropriation and Authenticity in American Law.”

As for what to avoid? In short, anything too obvious that perhaps feels appropriate for Halloween. “They shouldn’t wear something that’s just based on an Orientalist Western fantasy about China,” says Flora. “It’s important for the attendees to avoid anything that looks too much like a costume — heavy 'Oriental'-looking makeup and tired tropes will come across as unoriginal and culturally tone-deaf.”

“The concern is people will come wearing their best Orientalia, chopsticks in their hair, and that would be horrible. We can imagine that because that’s happened in the past,” adds Minh-Ha T. Pham, a Media Studies professor at Pratt and author of "Asians Wear Clothes on the Internet: Race, Gender, and the Work of Personal Style Blogging."

Also, don’t wear something inspired by an Asian country that isn’t China. “If a big enough celebrity shows up looking like a geisha, it’s not just the U.S. media that will tear them to pieces,” says Flora. “They’re going to be trending on Weibo within hours — and not in a good way.” A word of advice: "The main thing people need to ask is, 'Is this design something a Chinese person would actually buy?' They should probably be asking their Chinese friends this question rather than just asking themselves."

Vogue Social Editor Chloe Malle, who is directly involved with the gala and will cover it for a Vogue special issue, wrote in an email to Fashionista that the official dress code is "Chinese white tie." She says she's not sure "anyone really knows what that means, so it will be interesting to see how guests interpret it." While Malle says there are "extra brownie points involved" when one dresses on-theme, it's not a requirement for entry. She suggests playing with prints and colors from the Ming Dynasty in China, incorporating jade jewelry or wearing colors like red and yellow. (Red symbolizes joy and good luck in Chinese culture, she says, while yellow is historically the imperial color and represents royalty and heroism.) "Basically, as long as no one dresses like Fred Astaire in the 'Ziegfeld Follies,' I’ll be relieved."

The rest of the people I spoke with pretty much all agreed that the best and most productive way to approach the event would be to wear the designs of modern Chinese and Chinese-American designers. “It would be interesting for attendees to actually wear something by a Chinese designer who’s working right now, as a nod to the fact that China’s not just in the past," Pham says. While our current ideas about China might involve traditional tropes like cheongsams dresses, vases and porcelains, that could serve as a reminder “that China exists today and is a modern luxury design center," she argues.

With Chinese and Chinese-American designers being among the most talented working today — Derek Lam, Phillip Lim, Peter Som, Anna Sui, Alexander Wang, Masha Ma and Huishan Zhang (who was tapped to create a limited-edition capsule collection for Barneys tied to the exhibit) among them — that shouldn't be too difficult.

Update: This article was updated to include quotes from Chloe Malle.

Any fashion designer with a good amount of industry cred — or a convincing amount of cash — can attract young celebrities to his or her runway show during fashion week, but it takes a real icon to bring out the best-known A-listers above the age of 40. Giorgio Armani celebrated the 40th anniversary of his label (as well as the opening of his Silos museum) in Milan on Thursday with a special runway show and reception that attracted some major star power from the last few generations.

Armani's expertly tailored suits and elegant eveningwear (including many memorable gowns from his 10-year-old Armani Privé couture collection) have been red carpet favorites for decades, so it's not surprising that the designer has so many powerful Hollywood fans. It's not often that the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise, Glenn Close and Tina Turner are spotted in the front row these days, but these legendary names, and many others, flew to Milan to show their support for the 80-year-old designer.

Read on to see the best of the guest list at Armani's anniversary bash.

Part of the fun of the Metropolitan Museum's annual Costume Institute Gala — in recent years, at least — is peeking in on the action via celebrities' and industry insiders' Instagram accounts. Unfortunately for us, this year's edition of the Met Gala will be a social media-free zone, so we'll just have to use our imaginations to envision what's going on inside the venue once the attendees exit the red carpet.

As first reported by Page Six, the use of all cell phones for photography and social media are banned from the event, which is overseen by Vogue's Anna Wintour. A source familiar with the Met Gala's plans confirmed to Fashionista that this regulation will in fact be enforced, and is meant to help ensure the security and enjoyment of the high-profile guests in attendance.

While we're disappointed about the new rule, we're not exactly surprised, as a few of last year's posts from the party went viral — and were a little sloppy. The most memorable of these came from Cara Delevingne, who filmed a very drunk Reese Witherspoon and Zooey Deschanel in an elevator at the venue, and while the resulting footage was hilarious, it was basically a movie star's PR nightmare.

While real-time social media will be limited, we're sure that stars will roll out plenty of selfies in the days following the event, which we're already looking forward to. Whether or not elevator cameras at after-parties have also been banned remains to be seen. Sorry, Jay Z.
