Actress Carey Mulligan is never one to play it safe on the red carpet, but since giving birth to her first child Evelyn in October, the star has been on something of an unstoppable sartorial streak — first in an embellished, ruffled dress from Chanel's fall 2015 Couture collection, then in a Marc Jacobs pastel-blue power suit that's well worth a nod from Hillary Clinton. Continuing her upward trajectory, the 30-year-old actress attended the British Independent Film Awards in London on Sunday — where she was nominated for the Best Actress award for "Suffragette" — in a floor-length, floral Gucci dress (embroidered with a rather large parrot) from Alessandro Michele's spring 2016 collection.

Just a year ago, Mulligan would not have been the most obvious celebrity candidate for Gucci. But since Michele's intellectual revamp of the label, from its clothes to the website, we couldn't imagine a better muse than Mulligan, who's always been about that smart, elegant aesthetic. Given its three-quarter sleeves, length and high neck, the dress could have looked a bit dowdy on an unseasoned red carpet attendee. But Mulligan offset those elements with easy, tousled waves and very simple earrings to match. Let's just say that we were very much intrigued, and for all the right reasons.

Here's hoping that Mulligan will pleasantly surprise us with a similarly quirky look at the Oscars, too.
