What Women Want: Victoria Beckham vs. Public School

What Women Want: Victoria Beckham vs. Public School:

Like Diane von Furstenberg and Donna Karan before her, Victoria Beckham has positioned herself as a women's designer -- a designer who, as she stated in the show notes for her fall/winter 2015 collection, understands "what women want to wear and how they want their clothes to make them feel."

Looking at the collection, then, one can infer that women want to look tall, sleek and refined; sexy, too, but with the kind of sexy that comes in the form of expensive tailoring, a body-conscious dress with a high neck, and high-heeled boots, rather than exposed skin. They want their clothes to be simple, understated and tasteful, but still interesting -- a coat with a shoulder panel fastened by oversized buttons, a sweater with a billowing lower sleeve.

Public School, which showed directly after Beckham's show on Sunday morning, has an entirely different notion about how women want to dress. The collection marked Public School's one-year anniversary as both a menswear and a womenswear brand, and models of both sexes walked with an easy mobility in what has become known as "streetwear" -- cargo jackets, loose-legged pants and high-top sneakers inspired by California's skate and surf communities. There was an element of grunge in the form of long plaid dresses and skirts in gray and navy. Perhaps because of the bitter cold outside, editors were especially taken with the label's cream and beige calf-length poncho. And lest we think Public School is only good for casual wear, the designers ended the show with an elegant, yet still invitingly comfortable, black leather and wool v-neck dress that could easily be dressed up for a formal occasion.

And then there was Thakoon, which had one of the best collections I've seen so far. Unlike Alexander Wang, with his black, sporty cuts and technical fabrics, or Joseph Altuzarra, with his thigh-high slits and Romanian blouses, Thakoon Panichgul's signatures are not as specific (and thus recognizable) -- but he does consistently great clothes. For fall 2015, he showed a wide range of rich, sometimes exotic-looking pieces, beginning with a series of striped, psychedelic knits in contrasting hues. Then came coats and floor-length dresses in dark wheat and burgundy ombre, as well as fat shearling stoles and ponchos.

Later in the collection, he introduced coats and dresses decorated with squares of floral sequin embroidery and black dresses with deep V-necks, some styled over thin red or burgundy knits. The offering was eclectic, but held together with a tight palette and repeating shapes and materials, like the V-necks and shearling.

Luxe Layers and Stellar Casting Take Center Stage at Prabal Gurung

Luxe Layers and Stellar Casting Take Center Stage at Prabal Gurung:

Temperatures clocked in at a whopping seven degrees as we made our way to Prabal Gurung’s fall show on Sunday night, and it seems that the designer knew exactly what his frozen audience wanted to see walk down the runway: lots of layers, long coats, textural knitwear and more than just a hint of fur.

In his show notes, Gurung sites a trip he took to the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York as inspiration (following up on last season’s trek to the Himalayas), and this theme came through in a number of ways. A tribal-meets-Fair Isle motif permeated much of the collection, with arrowhead patterns knit into sweaters, coats and embroidered on the sparkly finale dresses. Heavy duffle coats made from wool and cashmere — many of which were trimmed with bright white fur — were layered over slinky, silk slip dresses and skirts with thigh-high slits. A snow leopard pattern was printed on dresses and outerwear as a nod to Gurung's love for the mountains. From start to end, tailoring took center stage: even the simplest dresses and separates — some with lace or silk inserts to reveal a bit more skin — beautifully showed off the body.

Every season, Gurung has a strong, confident woman in mind who challenges conventional beauty, and this really came across in his fall 2015 casting. Instead of relying on the “It” models of the moment, the designer featured some of the biggest names of the past two decades, including Kirsty Hume, Christina Kruse, Frankie Rayder and Tasha Tilberg, whose ages all fall within the mid-30s to early-40s range. These women — along with Caroline Trentini who closed the show — have children, stellar careers and a self-assurance that can only come with experience, and seeing them walk in Gurung’s sexy (yet ageless) looks made the show that much more memorable.

Emma Stone, Taylor Swift and More Dress Up for 'SNL'

Emma Stone, Taylor Swift and More Dress Up for 'SNL':

As a welcome break from the non-stop Fashion Week posts dominating our social media feeds, "Saturday Night Live"'s 40th anniversary extravaganza was the talk of the town in New York on Sunday. The event pulled a lot of star power: Aside from reuniting our favorite cast members of yore (Will Ferrell, Ana Gasteyer, Molly Shannon and Amy Poehler to name just a few), the 3.5 hour special included appearances from some of the biggest stars from film, television and music, including Miley Cyrus, Bradley Cooper, Taylor Swift and Kerry Washington.

Before reviving some of "SNL"'s fan favorite sketches like "Wayne's World," "The Californians," "Celebrity Jeopardy" and "Weekend Update," the A-listers took to the red carpet in their best evening wear. From Emma Stone's sequined Dior dress to "Fifty Shades of Grey" star Dakota Johnson's party-ready silver Sonia Rykiel number, a handful of the evening's ensembles rivaled what we've been seeing at Fashion Week. Read on to see the best looks from the night, and then we suggest getting lost in a "SNL" YouTube clip black hole — we've been fighting off the urge all morning.

Rihanna Dons McQueen For 'AnOther' Magazine, Gigi Hadid Wants to Be Cool Like Karlie Kloss

AnOther magazine has released three covers for its spring/summer 2015 issue, reflecting the three unique sides of the late Alexander McQueen. Titled "Present, Past and Future," the issue features cover stars Rihanna, Léa Seydoux and Stella Lucia in McQueen archival and current pieces. {AnOther Magazine}

"It" model Gigi Hadid wasn't always a pro on the runway. According to the 19-year-old, she only recently became comfortable, having to figure out everything on her own. Luckily for her, she's always had other models to look up to, like Karlie Kloss, about whom she had this to say: "It’s cool for everyone [to have] a signature walk. It’s boring when I go to a casting and every girl walks the same way. That’s why I love Karlie, you could cover her head and you know it’s her. Maybe one day I’ll be as cool as Karlie." {The Cut}

Earlier this month, we saw actress Natalie Portman making a clean getaway from her impending wedding via a helicopter for a "Miss Dior" short film. In the brand's newest print advertisements, the actress looks effortlessly beautiful for Miss Dior Eau De Parfum and Diorskin Nude Air foundation. {Fashion Gone Rogue}

Ever wondered what it takes to become a casting director for, oh, I don't know, Victoria's Secret or Michael Kors? Casting extraordinaire John Pfeiffer talks about the business of casting models, managing clients' expectations and the issue of runway diversity — and let's just say that it's a lot more complicated than just looking for pretty faces. {Business of Fashion}
