Tragedy of the would-be Victoria's Secret lingerie king

Tragedy of the would-be Victoria's Secret lingerie king:

The company’s founder imagined it as a luxurious, languid Victorian drawing room with silk drapes, dark wood and oriental rugs.

But today lingerie chain Victoria’s Secret is rather more 50 shades of pink.

Think glossy hot-pink walls and magenta armoires bursting with exquisite lacy treasures and it’s clear the multi-billion dollar brand has moved on in the four decades since it was started in 1970s’ California.

And that’s not only true of the company’s stores, of which there are more than 1,000 including a flagship in London’s Bond Street that opened in 2012.

Every November since 1995 the company has hosted the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, the world’s most extravagant catwalk spectacle, which last year alone cost a reported £7million to produce.

Normally held in cities such as Cannes, Miami and New York with performances from stars including the Spice Girls and Rihanna, this year the annual fashion gala is heading to London for the first time.

Tickets for the Earls Court event on December 2 are selling for £10,000 apiece.

In return you will get to admire luxurious, gem-enhanced undies being paraded by some of the world’s most physically desirable women to the music of some of the world’s topselling artists.

And for everyone else there is the free upload on YouTube which is viewed annually by millions.

The giant angel wings worn in the show have become emblematic of the brand and explain why super models – including Cara Delevingne and Alessandra Ambrosio – who promote the sumptuous but affordable lingerie and sleepwear are known as Victoria’s Secret Angels.

Last year’s show saw them in spectacular underwear in satin, silk and lace adorned with Swarovski crystals.

There are also eyecatching, one-off fusion pieces known as “fantasy bras” that are designed to draw attention to the brand.

These artworks blend delicate fabrics with precious gems and are the centrepiece of each show.

Last year’s was a £6million creation modelled by Candice Swanepoel featuring 18-carat gold as well as numerous diamonds, yellow sapphires and an outrageous 52-carat ruby.

The perfect present, perhaps, for a Russian oligarch’s wife or girlfriend. Becoming an Angel is a passport to fame and fortune.

It’s surely no coincidence that 16 of the 21 models who feature in Forbes’s 2014 model rich list including Miranda Kerr and Heidi Klum have joined this elite group.

But for all the opulence and extravagance that will be the hallmark of the 2014 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show the company has humble origins.

It was one man’s vision which was to end in the most tragic circumstances.

Roy Raymond, founder of Victoria's Secret

He was young, creative, really a brilliant businessman but he suffered setbacks and couldn’t seem to bounce back from them

Gaye Raymond
Behind the razzle-dazzle of diamonds, beautiful mannequins and sexy marketing, lies a sad tale of lost dreams and fatherless children.

Roy Raymond was a 30-year-old married father-of-two with an MBA from Stanford who experienced his eureka moment while attempting to buy a romantic present for his wife in San Francisco in the mid-1970s.

He walked into a department store to buy a thoughtful gift of lingerie only to find ugly, floral-print nightgowns and glowering sales assistants who made him feel a pariah for perusing the shelves.

Harsh fluorescent lights made the items on sale look even less appealing.

Bemused by the experience Raymond mentioned it to a few friends and soon developed a winning idea.

He would use his business acumen to create a lingerie store that would make men comfortable buying lovely intimate gifts for their wives and girlfriends.

He envisaged a look that was part gentleman’s club, part boudoir, and chose the name Victoria because his home had been built in the Victorian style and he thought the name embodied genteel elegance.

Adding Secret was a stroke of genius.

It implied that beneath a classy exterior lay treasures to be discovered.

Raymond borrowed £25,000 from the bank and the same again from his in-laws and in 1977 he and his wife Gaye leased a space in a shopping mall in Palo Alto, San Francisco. “I remember making the velvet curtains for the first changing rooms,” said Gaye in a recent interview.

“We used a lot of silk and natural fibres in our lingerie and it was very high quality.”

But where Raymond turned out to be less than gifted was in valuing the worth of his idea.

He had created a unique brand at a time when underwear was still seen by the majority as something functional and utilitarian.

Sexy lingerie was regarded as an occasional treat – something to be splashed out upon, perhaps only on a wedding night or other special event.

Victoria’s Secret made it more ubiquitous, put the fun into functional, and sales soared, especially as Raymond had the idea of producing lavish catalogues that could take the goods directly into people’s homes to be perused at their leisure (this was of course long before the internet).

For the first year turnover was more than £300,000.

Within five years there were three more stores in San Francisco and by 1982 there were annual sales of more than £2.5million.

But although customers loved the brand they were still mainly men and the company was soon facing bankruptcy as it was not shifting enough stock.

It was then Leslie Wexner stumbled across one of the appealing branches of the small, family-run chain.

At the age of 40 Wexner was a self-made man worth £25million following his realisation in his 20s that women were ready to dump their dresses and start buying casual wear.

In 1963 he had opened a shop for women that sold only sportswear under the name the Limited.

By 1977 he had nearly 200 stores, his fortune was assured and he was on the hunt.

In 2010 he recalled the moment he discovered Victoria’s Secret. “It was a small store and it was brothel Victorian with red velvet sofas.

"But there was very sexy lingerie and I hadn’t seen anything like it in the US.”

However there were flaws keeping women away, not least the advertising which looked a little red light district for middle-class tastes.

In short the shop was a turnoff to women.

Wexner realised repositioning the brand would bring in a whole new audience and change the company’s fortunes.

It was then Raymond made his fatal mistake.

Rather than selling a percentage of his company to Wexner he sold the entire operation for £600,000 in a desperate attempt to pay off creditors (it was incorrectly reported as £2.6million at the time).

“My husband Roy had spoken to Les Wexner a few times about working together but ultimately Roy felt he couldn’t share the decision- making and was happier getting out completely,” explained Gaye.

His mistake was to prove so emotionally and financially costly that it is cited in business literature and was referred to in 2010 Facebook movie, The Social Network starring Justin Timberlake, as a cautionary tale.

“He sells the company to Leslie Wexner and the Limited. Happy ending, right?” says Timberlake’s character to the actor playing Mark Zuckerberg, who founded Facebook.

“Except two years later the company’s worth $500million (£300million) and Roy Raymond jumps off the Golden Gate Bridge.”

This is exactly what happened. Raymond was never able to recapture his initial success.

While the company he founded had stores popping up all over the United States and beyond as Wexner successfully tempted working women to buy sexy lingerie for everyday use, Raymond failed to get any of his subsequent ventures off the ground.

His high-end children’s retail and catalogue company My Child’s Destiny was the final straw.

In 1986 Raymond filed for bankruptcy having lost £650,000.

He and Gaye lost two homes and their cars and the stress was so great that in 1993 they divorced.

This was the same year that Victoria’s Secret became the biggest lingerie retailer in America.

In September that year Raymond jumped to his death off the Golden Gate Bridge, leaving behind his two devastated teenage children.

“It’s so sad,” said Gaye.

“He was young, creative, really a brilliant businessman but he suffered setbacks and couldn’t seem to bounce back from them.

"Roy and I used to have our regrets about how much it had changed from our original vision.

"Yet they’ve done a great job making it a commercial success."

The Sixties was all about heavy feline-inspired eyeliner, the Seventies saw us douse ourselves in bronzer, the Eighties brought colour to our make-up bags and the Nineties was all about a fresh, paired-back face.

Max Factor has been charting the key make-up looks through the centuries as part of its 100 Years Of Glamour campaign.

And celebrity make-up artist Pat McGrath has created what she believes to be the 'look of the century' on Victoria's Secret stunner Candice Swanepoel.

Using Candice as her muse, Pat has created a powerful ‘Party’ look – a refreshing and new approach to glamorous party looks, using bold colours and the very best in make-up artistry know-how.

Candice's eyes have been adorned in different shades of blue eyeshadow while her lips pop with a pillarbox red colour.

Her cheekbones have been accentuated with bright pink blush while her eyebrows have been made dark and bold.

Speaking about the look Pat says: "This is a very bold, brave, decadent and hedonistic look, bold shimmers, lots of colour, full blush, glossy lips.

"This is a really strong couture look that women can take inspiration from.

"You can take the blush, a bold lip, even use the eyeshadow and just work it as an eyeliner - you can literally break it apart to make the perfect party look for you and if you’re brave, do the whole thing.”

If it gets us looking like Candice, who will be in the UK in December for the Victoria's Secret show, we're happy to give it a go.

She's dated some of the hottest men on the planet - from Harry Styles to John Mayer - but for the time being Taylor Swift is content with being single.

Speaking to British Cosmopolitan, the popstar revealed she has given up on dating: “People will say, 'Let me set you up with someone', and I’m just sitting there saying, ‘That’s not what I’m doing. I’m not lonely, I’m not looking.’ They just don’t get it.

"I’ve learnt that just because someone is cute and wants to date you, that’s not a reason to sacrifice your independence and allow everyone to say whatever they want about you. I’m not doing that anymore.”

She confesses it would take someone truly special to sweep her off her feet.

“It’d take someone really special for me to undergo the circumstances I have to go through to experience a date. I don’t know how I would ever have another person in my world trying to have a relationship with me, or a family.

"The best answer I can come up with now is go at it alone. Life can be romantic without having a romance. I’m very attracted to how happy I am now.”

The 24-year-old, who recently released her fifth album 1989, says there is an inequality between the way men and women's love lives are discussed.

“My girlfriends and I talk a lot about feminism and the inequality between the way men and women are talked about.

"The kind of things we say are, ‘Why is it mischievous, fun and sexy if a guy has a string of lovers that he’s cast aside; loved and left? Yet if a woman dates three or four people in an eight-year period she is a serial dater and it gives some 12-year-old the idea to call her a ‘slut’ on the internet?’

"It’s not the same for boys, it just isn’t and that’s a fact.”

Taylor gushes about her female friends, especially Girls creator Lena Dunham.

“Her perspective has truly shaped me in the past couple of years. She is just so enthusiastic about life, about other women. She is like a hug in the form of a person.”

And it's these friends who have helped her settle into her new life in the Big Apple.

“Moving to New York is the best thing I’ve ever done. I never thought I’d be able to survive that city. It’s so big and bright. Then I woke up one day about a year ago and it was all I could think about.

"I needed a new challenge and there’s no bigger challenge than uprooting your life, finding new places to hang out, new friendship circles…”

The Made In Chelsea fashionista says she'd love to makeover Kate Middleton

With her flawless porcelain skin, doll-like features and glossy mane of brunette hair, Rosie Fortescue is one of Chelsea's prettiest residents.

And, thanks to her vast collection of fedora hats, pussy-bow blouses and chic pencil skirts, the 24-year-old has fast become SW3's top fashionista.

So it makes sense that Rosie is putting all of her fashion know-how into her own clothing line with online retailer Lipstick Boutique.

As she launches the AW14 collection, we catch up with her to talk clothes, boys and the Middletons.

Congratulations on your new collection, Rosie. Why have you decided to launch a range with Lipstick Boutique?

Thank you! The timing felt right and it was something I could really get my teeth into. That was important to me, I didn't just want to put my name to something. I’m really pleased with everything and so proud of it.

You're a regular at London Fashion Week. Did you get any inspiration from there?

I didn’t want the collection to just be catered to one trend. I wanted it to be wearable and to represent my own style. I’ve got some really tailored pieces, bold skirts and cute separates. I wanted people to look at the collection as well and think, ‘That’s Rosie.’

Rosie has designed a clothing line for online retailer Lipstick Boutique

Who can you see wearing it?

Everyone! My mum would look cute in a pussy-bow blouse with a skirt but then someone younger could style it differently. I wanted the collection to be really versatile.

Which celebrity would you love to see papped in your designs?

I've designed some chunky knits and I think they would really suit someone like Cara Delevingne. She’s very chilled out, casual and pulls off that 'still out from the night before' vibe.

Your best friend Millie Mackintosh launched a clothing line this year. Did you share design tips?

Our collections and styles are quite different. We speak to each other every day about what we’re up to but we didn’t really talk about the fashion. We wanted to make our collections different. I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from my own wardrobe, what I like to wear and what I think people will enjoy.

How would you style Millie?

I would put her in the shaggy gillet - that’s so her vibe - with a pussy-bow blouse and the tuxedo trousers.

If you could get your hands on a celebrity and get them a fashion makeover, who would it be?

She's overhauled her style a bit now but probably Kate Middleton. I know that's a bit mean. I think Pippa Middleton needs a bit of a style update, too. The first thing I would do is takeaway the flesh-coloured tights. Instantly. That’s what I would do. I think they should be banned.

What would you dress Pippa in?

My mum says, 'The Middletons need to be appropriate'. Okay, they're appropriate but Pippa isn't in the public eye as much so I feel like she could vamp it up a bit. I'd put her in a big skirt and knitted jumper, that would be cool. I don't think she has that young, fresh vibe. She needs to get that.

Rosie says she'd love to see supermodel Cara Delevingne in her designs

What are your winter wardrobe essentials?

A fake leather trouser and a big chunky jumper. I think it’s so flattering and it takes no time to put on. It’s effortless.

What fashion faux pas have you made in the past?

There’s nothing I can pinpoint and think, ‘Oh god’ but I’ve learnt a lot more about my body now and what suits me. I know my own style. I don’t like to wear trends, I like to take inspiration from them.

What are your style rules now?

I don’t like getting huge amount of leg out. Tiny shorts are a bit, eww. Upper body is nicer to look at, it’s more toned and feminine. I do wear crop tops but sometimes I feel self conscious. But it’s not like I’ve got massive boobs and it looks slutty. There’s a way to wear it.

Are you a gym bunny?

I’ve got a love-hate relationship with the gym. I try and go once or twice a week and do weight training. I’m naturally quite slim so I don’t need to get on a treadmill for half an hour and do cardio. Weight training makes you strong, it tones you up and it’s good mentally and physically.

Millie's really into her fitness. Do you workout together?

We do pilates. I've got a studio near my flat so she’ll come over, we'll do it and then grab some lunch.

Rosie says she's single at the moment and enjoying it

Are you still enjoying being on Made in Chelsea?

I loved it. The New York shows were the best two months of my life - and you guys didn’t see everything that we got up to!

Do you feel like you need to constantly have controversy in your life to get good story lines?

I would never do that. I’m not going to let myself be used for entertainment. I’m not a puppet. I have more respect for myself. I’ve been in the show since the start, I did the pilot and I’m friends with everyone on the show. I don’t feel the need to show up to everything and get extra attention. I’m quite happy not putting my love life on the show so I’ll leave that up to others.

How to you manage to keep your love life separate?

A lot of people think I have been single for years, I haven’t. I’ve just chosen not to have my love life on the show. I’ve gone out with people who haven’t been show appropriate as they’re slightly older. I don’t go for Chelsea boys, put it that way.

Why?

A. They've slept with all of my friends. B. I like to go for someone a bit different.

Who is your ideal man?

Someone creative. Someone just really interesting and passionate about what they do. Dark hair, blue eyes if possible.

Have have you avoided Spencer Matthews' charms?

I would never sleep with Spencer! He always says to me, ‘Come on Rosie, you’re the only one who hasn’t.’ He said, ‘Come on have a pop on me, it would be hilarious.’ He’s such a nice guy - as a friend. Because I’ve never hooked up with him we don’t have that love-hate thing. I think he’s absolutely hilarious. He’s never been mean to me or done anything to hurt me.

How does he get the girls?

He's good fun to be around. He’s entertaining, he’s amusing, he makes you laugh. I can see how the girls get led in. I’m not that silly where I feel like I could change someone like him. He needs to change himself when the time is right. He’s so young still.

Are you single at the moment?

Yes. I’m really enjoying it.
