At age 15, Lima finished first place in Ford's "Supermodel of Brazil" competition and took second place the following year in the Ford "Supermodel of the World" competition before signing with Elite Model Management in New York City. Lima never thought about being a model, although she had won many beauty pageants in elementary school. However, she had a friend at school who wanted to enter a modeling contest and didn't want to enter alone, so Lima entered with her. Both sent in pictures, and the contest sponsor soon asked Lima to come out for the competition. Soon after, at the age of 15, she entered and finished in first place in Ford's "Supermodel of Brazil" model search. She subsequently entered the 1996 Ford "Supermodel of the World" contest and finished in second place. Three years later, Lima moved to New York City and signed with Elite Model Management. After acquiring representation, Lima's modeling portfolio quickly began to expand, and she appeared in numerous international editions of Vogue and Marie Claire. As a runway model, she has walked the catwalks for designers such as Vera Wang, Christian Lacroix, Emanuel Ungaro, Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Ralph Lauren and Valentino, among others. Lima became a guess girl in 2000, appearing in that year's fall ad campaign. She also appeared in the book A Second Decade of Guess? Images. Lima continued to build upon her portfolio, doing more print work for Maybelline, for whom she worked as a spokesmodel from 2003 until 2009, the same year she appeared in the company's first calendar, a limited edition run also featuring Kemp Muhl, Jessica White, Julia Stegner, and Anna Wang. The Biggest Trends from the Spring 2016 Runways

The Biggest Trends from the Spring 2016 Runways:

After four long weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris, the spring 2016 collections have finally come to a close. There were ups and there were downs, but most importantly, there were trends — a whole lot of them, actually. We've already covered what each city specialized in this month, and now it's time to take a look at the bigger picture. You may remember that the biggest trend of fall 2015 was the '70s, and while this did continue into spring, the nostalgia was a little more spread out this time around. For those of you who aren't as enamored with all things retro, don't fret — there was a lot more to the season than simply looking to the past. Read on to get a full rundown on spring's top trends.

'90s

From left to right: Calvin Klein Collection, Betsey Johnson, Acne Studios, Giamba, and Rag & Bone
Fashion is feeling pretty nostalgic these days, but of the decades referenced this season, the '90s were the biggest story — especially in Paris. Rave culture, minimalism, grunge and fanny packs all made appearances. You have been warned.

Ruffles

Ruffles lined garments on an impressive number of catwalks. They came in many shapes and sizes, but most designers used them sparsely — and to great effect.

The Cold Shoulder

Shoulders were the go-to erogenous zone for spring 2016. If a designer had a chance to show them off, they took it. From off-the-shoulder tops to shoulder cutouts to asymmetrical necklines, it felt like no runway was left out of this trend. See below for examples of each.

Crumpled Fabric

Ironing can be a bit of a hassle (especially if you're bad at it), but even if you're a pro, there is probably a more productive way to spend your time in the morning. Luckily, the answer to this is simple: pre-creased and rumpled clothing, of course.

Micro Pleats

From left to right: J.Mendel, Gabriele Colangelo, Sonia Rykiel, Giles, and Stella McCartney

In a season where pleats were a big story, many designers sculpted their spring silhouettes through micro pleats.

Victorian

High necks, ruffles, bows and broderie anglaise were just a few of the common elements for one of spring's most popular trends — Victorian-inspired looks. This is one you may recall being popular for fall 2015 as well.

Trailing Tassels

From left to right: Boss, Marc Jacobs, Derek Lam, Michael Kors, and Joseph
From left to right: Boss, Marc Jacobs, Derek Lam, Michael Kors, and Joseph
Like a tail trailing from a comet, tassels (wide, thin, fabric, string, etc.) seemed to adorn every other look on the runway. Some were the result of a bow or some other utilitarian knot, others were just there for decoration. Either way, they left an impression.

Pajama Dressing

You know that feeling after you get home from work and change into your comfiest clothes? Designers clearly want this to be a constant sensation for their customers come spring, and they showed more than enough daytime pajama options for everyone.

Latin Influence

From left to right: Blugirl, Proenza Schouler, Oscar de la Renta, Osman, and Roberto Cavalli

Ruffles, flamenco skirts and the color red came together in the many Spanish-inspired looks for spring 2016.

Deconstructed Oxfords

From left to right: Zac Posen, Palmer Harding, Jacquemus, Delpozo, and Fyodor Golan
There was a time when humans believed that there were only so many ways to wear an Oxford shirt. That time was before spring 2016, as designers showed endless creativity with this staple garment. Warning: Not all of them are work appropriate.

During fashion month, everyone's looking for a new face — fortunately, the runways rarely disappoint. After spending the last few weeks looking at show photos pretty much nonstop, we've been making lists of all the up-and-coming models who have been kicking ass left and right, all the way from New York City to Paris. Some of them have walked runway shows before — as exclusives, or during resort and couture — but for all these young ladies, spring 2016 marked their breakout season. And while it's hard to predict the whims of this particular industry, we'd say with some confidence that many of these women are going places.

Without further ado, please meet the class of spring 2016.

We're talking Diane Von Furstenberg, Oscar de la Renta, Giles, Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana... you get the picture.

Van Rompaey, who hails from the Netherlands, has been around for a few seasons now, walking Prada and Louis Vuitton as an exclusive for spring 2015, as well as appearing in both Vuitton's spring campaign and a Chanel fragrance ad. But while she isn't exactly a new face, this was the first season that she truly took the catwalks by storm, landing a string of golden gigs including Jason Wu, Altuzarra, Diane Von Furstenberg, Rag & Bone, Marc Jacobs, Coach, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Gucci and Prada.

In her first season, Wangy Xinyu — who's listed on Next's new faces board as simply "Wangy" — fully killed it, walking a host of major shows like Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Alexander McQueen and Lanvin.

After booking a few big shows for fall 2015 (Prada, Proenza Schouler), Alice Metza brought it for spring 2016, landing on the runways at Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Altuzarra, Moschino, Miu Miu, Lanvin and Valentino. Oh, and Prada. Don't forget about Prada.

The haircut that launched, if not a thousand ships, then certainly one modeling career. After letting hairstylist Guido Palau chop her chest-length hair into a shaggy bowl cut backstage at Alexander Wang, Peyton Knight went on to have an incredible season, walking (among others) J.W. Anderson, Marc Jacobs, Acne, Fendi, Prada and, most memorably, Gucci. Drastic haircuts can be risky, but when they work out, nothing is more winning.

Ruth Bell (The Society)

Speaking of haircuts... Ruth Bell snipped her long blonde hair for Alexander McQueen's fall 2015 campaign and promptly went on to win a spot in Saint Laurent's cruise ads. Her first big fashion month has shaped up to be a strong one, too, dotted with appearances at Gucci, Iris van Herpen, Saint Laurent, Isabel Marant, Lanvin and Versace.

Pooja Mor (Elite)

Alien looks may be in, but there's always room on the runway for straight-up stunners. Pooja Mor, who made her catwalk debut at Louis Vuitton's cruise 2016 show, wowed at Givenchy, Victoria Beckham, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Roberto Cavalli and Calvin Klein. With her classical elegance, Mor could certainly do big things.

A newcomer with dainty features and a beautiful name, Nirvana Naves kept her show schedule small but entirely kickass. A Prada exclusive, Naves also walked Hermès, John Galliano, Céline, Acne, Balenciaga, Chloé and J.W. Anderson.

Lameka Fox (IMG)

Scouted on Instagram by IMG's development team, Lameka Fox debuted at Marc Jacobs's resort 2016 show before hitting fashion month in full this September. Now that she's appeared on the runway for Burberry, Public School, Hood by Air, Giamba and Valentino, among others, we're expecting to see much, much more of Ms. Fox.

Hyun Ji Shin (IMG)

With a Benetton campaign and some editorials for i-D, Vogue Korea and Oyster already on her résumé, Hyun Ji Shin took off at the spring 2016 shows. Ranked as one of the most prolific catwalkers of the season by Models.com, she logged time with Rodarte, DKNY, Public School, Simone Rocha, Miu Miu and Prada.

Julia Fleming (Next)

The definition of a winning first season. Right out of the gate, Julia Fleming won runway spots at Rag & Bone, Simone Rocha, Marni, Christopher Kane, Alexander McQueen and Valentino, among many, many others. With the sort of quietly striking and versatile look that appeals to a wide range of designers, we'd guess that this is just the first of many excellent show seasons for the Philadelphia native.

Over the past decade, we've watched the fascinating rise of direct-to-consumer fashion and accessories brands on the Internet. By cutting out the middle man (i.e., the department store), these brands are delivering better value and building strong and loyal customer bases. But for every Everlane and Warby Parker success story, there are hundreds of start-ups that fail. How do brands stand out and stay relevant in such a competitive environment?

At our New York "How to Make It in Fashion" conference on Oct. 23, we'll speak with founders of some of the most successful new brands in the business. Our speakers include: Christina Mercando, the founder and CEO of Ringly, a company that's dedicated to seamlessly integrating technology into our everyday lives and wardrobes; Julie Frederickson, CEO and co-founder of Stowaway, which offers beauty products perfectly packaged into manageable sizes for the on-the-go lifestyle; Kal Vepuri, co-founder of The Arrivals, which provides luxurious outerwear for men and women; Lane Gerson, co-founder and co-CEO of men's footwear line Jack Erwin; and Matt Taylor, co-founder and CEO of Tracksmith, which celebrates running culture with stylish and high-performance sportswear.

Tickets are still available to our all-day conference in New York City, where you’ll hear from industry luminaries and get a chance to be mentored one-on-one. The event is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23, so grab your ticket today before they sell out.

Stella McCartney Sues Steve Madden Over Handbag Knockoff

Steve Madden has been hit with yet another intellectual property lawsuit — this time by British designer Stella McCartney. On Tuesday, the 44-year-old designer filed a complaint against Steve Madden with the Southern district of New York accusing the lower-priced brand of knocking off one of her most "well-known and enormously popular" handbag styles. Lawyers are seeking an injunction to discontinue sales of Steve Madden's knockoff product and "an accounting of Defendant’s profits." The products in question: Stella McCartney's Falabella Foldover tote bag in black ($1,195) and Steve Madden's BTotally handbag ($108), pictured below.

According to court documents, Steve Madden began selling a "poorly-made," but "virtually identical" knockoff bag that will likely "cause economic harm to consumers, given its shoddy quality." The documents point out several poor reviews of the BTotally bag from Steve Madden's website, as evidence that the knockoff will likely damage Stella McCartney's reputation and result in a loss of sales as a result of confusion. The documents also point out similarities between the two designs, including fabric inserts at the chain handles, the use of whip-stitching and the continuous chain extending to form handles.

Since it was released in 2009, Stella McCartney's high-end vegan bag has been popular amongst celebrities, including Anne Hathaway, Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham. The Falabella collection includes a wide variety of shapes and styles that, according to the documents, have racked in "tens of millions of dollars" since their launch.

This isn't the first time that Steve Madden has been hit with a lawsuit by a luxury brand. Back in 2009, Balenciaga sued the footwear company for copyright infringement, trademark infringement, false designation of origin and unfair competition in regards to its lego shoes. Madden even once told us he was surprised that he hadn't gotten sued more, so this shouldn't come as much of a shock.

15 Looks We Loved From Paris Fashion Week

15 Looks We Loved From Paris Fashion Week:

By the time Paris Fashion Week rolled around, many buyers and editors were complaining about what a dud the spring 2016 season was turning out to be. But after Dior's excellent show on Friday, where Raf Simons brought out light, technically complex clothes kept carefully within the house codes, those mutterings started to die down.

Paris offered up some of the freshest ideas and best craftsmanship we'd seen all season, starting with Lemaire, Maison Margiela and Dries Van Noten on day two, and ending with Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu's dives into virtual reality and irrationality, respectively, on the final day. On the news front, Courrèges returned to the show schedule with new creative directors Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant; Alexander Wang made his final bow at Balenciaga with an all-ivory collection; and the Margiela-trained designer of Vetements, Demna Gvasali, showed a divisive collection before Kering announced he'd be taking over at Balenciaga. In addition to a host of strong collections, Paris also produced some of the most memorable show experiences of the season, which brought out tears (Rick Owens, Valentino) and big, wondering smiles (Chanel) from even the most jaded show-goers.

Here are some of the best looks we saw over the past nine days, presented in roughly the order we saw them.

Lemaire's Easy Chic Separates

A look from Lemaire's spring 2016 collection.
There is no designer in Paris doing the French "effortless chic" thing better than Lemaire right now. Fresh off a collaboration with Uniqlo and a minority stake investment from Bpifrance, former Hermès creative director Christophe Lemaire and his partner, Sarah-Linh Tran, showed a collection that added a bit more volume than usual to their clean, relaxed clothes. We were particularly taken with the crisp, papery quality of this off-the-shoulder blouse and relaxed, high-waisted trousers.

Maison Margiela's Dismantled Couture

There is no mistaking a John Galliano design, but the merging of his aesthetic with the house codes of Maison Margiela has produced some pretty spectacular results. For spring 2016, he combined Margiela's love of process with his own love of Golden Age couture and the mad beauties who wore it, showing artfully constructed pieces that were frayed, ripped or ruined with paint, as if the models had accidentally sat down on wet benches after putting them on. The look above — a spongy neoprene jacket worn over a retro floral swimsuit and topped off with a wiry sunhat, fishnets and white heels — was one of our favorites from the collection.

Off White's Elevated Streetwear

Virgil Abloh is best known as Kanye West's creative director — but the fashion world began to take him a little more seriously when his label, Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh, was included among this year's LVMH Prize finalists. His spring 2016 collection excellently embodied the concept of elevated streetwear, like the look above, which — through cut alone — transformed a white tee and white maxi skirt into something elegant and powerful.

Dries Van Noten's Panoply of Clashing Prints

The rich colors and clashing prints of Dries Van Noten's spring 2016 collection were a feast for the eyes, and a bit of '40s Hollywood siren influence gave the show a compellingly sexy spin. These ruby and amethyst jacquard trousers were one of our favorite pieces from the whole collection, and the quieter fabrics of the oversized blazer and bustier top allowed them to take center stage.

Chloé's Cheerful Bohemianism

There was a sweetly joyous feeling to Chloé's spring 2016 collection, which featured a lot of casual denim and, new for the label, sporty pieces like striped track pants. But our favorite pieces were classic Claire Wright Keller, like the final look above: a sweeping pleated chiffon halter dress in an eye-pleasing combination of salmon, cerulean, mint and lilac, its front embroidered in lines sloping from the rib cage.

Dior's Updated Bar Jacket

There was a lot to love from Dior's light and airy spring 2016 collection — particularly a series of pale sheer-striped dresses layered over scalloped cotton tops and shorts — but we were even more taken with Raf Simons's update on the house's iconic Bar jacket, which was elongated and softened and no less artfully tailored.

Isabel Marant's Cool-Girl Trousers and Fringed Skirts

Isabel Marant's girl went to India this season, bringing back clothes that synthesized the designer's casual, tomboy silhouettes with colorful embroidery, studs and fringe. Though the collection was strong as a whole, there was no competition about our favorite look: A pair of look-at-me red-striped trousers worn under a matching wrap skirt and sharp black wrap shirt, shown above.

Alexander Wang's Ivory Farewell at Balenciaga

A look from Balenciaga's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
A look from Balenciaga's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
Ivory is a color we traditionally associate with purity, weddings and fresh beginnings — and Alexander Wang's use of only that color for his final collection at Balenciaga suggested it was not about commemorating his own short chapter at the house but wiping the slate for a new one. Wang mixed street and sporty silhouettes, like low-waisted trousers and racer backs, with elegant ruffles and lace, and the result was wholly unique. Though it lacked the street and sporty elements seen elsewhere, we were struck by the pure beauty of the dress above.

Alexander McQueen's Softened Approach

A look from Alexander McQueen's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree

Sarah Burton knows how to make a beautifully crafted gown, but her frequent allusions to historical dress make them at best trying to wear, and at worst costume-y. This season she made her allusions and her tailoring softer, with excellent results.

Mugler's Sharp Suiting

A look from Mugler's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
A look from Mugler's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
It's a little tough out there for designers who like to create tight, sexy dresses and show a bit of skin — the fashion world is much more enamored with the covered-up sexiness shown by Phoebe Philo, Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham these days. But designer David Koma does it better than anyone, opting for a less-is-more approach and super-sharp tailoring, seen in this navy suit for Mugler, above.

Comme des Garçons's Strange Beasts

A look from Comme des Garçons's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
A look from Comme des Garçons's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
There is no designer in fashion more original than Rei Kawakubo, who this season showed just 15 looks for Comme des Garçons that defied easy classification. There was a monstrosity to the clothes, not just in volume but in the details: This dress (if you can call it that) was covered in a ruff of feathers and what looked like giant, stumpy spiders' legs, which made us want to recoil before reaching out to touch.

Céline's Quiet Confidence

A look from Céline's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
A look from Céline's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
Phoebe Philo does not design loud clothes. She lets the woman wear the clothes rather than the other way around, and those who wear them exude a powerful but understated confidence. The neutral layered dresses and flat boots from Céline's spring collection did exactly that for the model above.

Stella McCartney's Airtex Effect

A look from Stella McCartney's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
A look from Stella McCartney's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
Stella McCartney's spring 2016 collection was bright, wearable and joyously modern, captured in the citrus floor-length dress above, which used eyelet embroidery to create a neat airtex effect.

Valentino's Masterful Tribute to Africa

A look from Valentino's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
A look from Valentino's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
Valentino's spring tribute to Africa featured some of the most complex and intricate looks we saw, dazzlingly beaded, embroidered and feathered. But it was two of the simplest dresses — pleated semi-transparent chiffon and earthy in color, with flowing cape-backs — that stole our breath as they moved.

Louis Vuitton's Holographic Dresses

A look from Louis Vuitton's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
A look from Louis Vuitton's spring 2016 collection. Photo: Imaxtree
For Louis Vuitton's spring 2016 collection, Nicolas Ghesquière turned his penetrating lens to virtual worlds and avatars, drawing a neat parallel between gameplay and fashion, and using traditional materials to create some very futuristic-looking clothes. For the finale, Ghesquière introduced a series of silvery, holographic dresses that looked as if they had been molded by 3D printers, but were in fact made from "tulle covered in celluloid sequins, hand-painted in oily stripes and then scrunched into sine waves," per Vanessa Friedman.
