Rise City Swim Is Looking For Fashion Interns In New York:

Rise City Swim launched in March 2015 as one of the city's most innovative swimwear brands; it has established itself in the market by not only offering breezy separates that make it easy for the on-the-go woman to look sexy and feel confident, but also by promoting the message: It’s not how you look. It’s how you live. Inspired by the women who make the city so great, Rise City Swim aims to be a platform for “Women on the Rise." It has spotlighted numerous impressive women in features on the website, as well as various events and lectures.

Rise City Swim is looking for an intern. The intern's main role will be assisting the brand's designer; much of the work will be performed remotely, although attendance at various meetings at the company's SoHo headquarters will also be required.

Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Designing graphics for the website and social media
  • Working on the backend of the website, including improving SEO and updating the homepage
  • Writing engaging blog posts
  • Proposing partnerships with similar brands and forming relationships with them
  • Assisting with administrative work, such as executing shipments and travel arrangements
  • Conducting market research and creating presentations based on such research
  • Assisting in the planning of brand events
An interest in fashion is a must, as is basic knowledge of Photoshop and Shopify. Photography skills and past experience with market research are pluses. The ideal candidate is a driven self-starter who can work both independently and with a group. Hours are flexible; a daily stipend will be provided.

Please send cover letters and resumes to Jane Reynolds at jane@risecityswim.com.

Pre-Fall 2016: the 12 Biggest Trends

Pre-Fall 2016: the 12 Biggest Trends:

Tory Burch said that she was stuck on the '70s for pre-fall 2016, and we quickly realized that she spoke for a lot of designers. The '70s trend remains as strong as ever, and we're starting to wonder if it's even a trend anymore given its prevalence over so many seasons.

While designers may have agreed on the decade of the moment, they didn't agree on what pre-fall means temperature-wise, showing both fur coats and sheer dresses, sometimes in the same collections (and even the same look). With the mild weather we experienced all through December, followed by freezing temperatures, which then disappeared again, we have no idea what's around the corner. Whatever the case, these ups and downs keep you on your toes wardrobe-wise, as it's not often that your parka is plucked from the closet around the same time as a cropped pant.

Consensus may be hard to pin down during pre-fall, but trends always emerge. Join us in taking a look at some of the biggest trends for pre-fall 2016, from animal print coats to "Star Wars."

The Perfect Kiernan Shipka Look You Missed This Weekend

We at Fashionista gripe about Dior's strict relationship with Jennifer Lawrence — the actress's style sensibility doesn't quite gel with the frocks she ends up picking for major events. Meanwhile, one only has to look to Kiernan Shipka for evidence of major style synchronicity. The young actress has the right balance of grace, youthful charm and poise to pull off Dior like few other "It" girls out there.

Shipka sadly did not make an appearance on the red carpet at the Golden Globes on Sunday, despite being in town for the parties leading up to the first major awards show of the season. (We need to accept that "Mad Men" is over, I guess.) But, thankfully, she filled the Shipka-sized hole in our hearts by attending the annual W magazine event in head-to-toe Dior. The heightened hemline is balanced by a sensible checkered print and iPad sized pockets. The pointy black boots are sophisticated without being too sexy. The same could be said of her soft, modern take on classic Hollywood waves.

Her stylists Jill Lincoln and Jordan Johnson told us this fall that they requested something "fun, young, pretty" for Shipka's Emmys appearance, achieving that with a Dior pants look. Clearly, the brand works for her, and helped her to stand out from the pack on a crowded weekend of parties and red carpets.

Gwyneth Paltrow's Cosmetics Line is Here

As consumer desire for safe and clean beauty products grows, beauty companies are jumping in to fill that demand. Retailers like CAP Beauty in New York City, e-tailers like Credo Beauty and direct-to-consumer brands like Beautycounter have popped up to provide variety to consumers who want their beauty products as clean as the kale they're presumably eating on a regular basis. Celebrities, who are often at the forefront of the eco movement as users, have been entering the space, too. Jessica Alba launched her Honest Beauty cosmetics line last fall and Miranda Kerr has a small line of skin care and masks called Kora. Now Gwyneth Paltrow, queen of Goop and all things natural, has finally entered the fray with a color cosmetics line by Juice Beauty.

As you'll recall, Paltrow took a stake in the 10-year-old organic skin care brand in early 2015. It's well-established and produces high-quality and efficacious organic skin care, but color cosmetics were not something the brand had fully committed to. Karen Behnke, the founder and CEO, says the company had dabbled in color for the past five years, but when Paltrow came on board as an investor, taking on the role of creative director of makeup, that's when everyone really committed to the concept.

The 78-piece collection launches Monday at Juice Beauty and Ulta, but it wasn't an easy line to bring to market, thanks to Paltrow's exacting standards and the challenges of working with organic ingredients. "She really sets the bar high and had a conventional chemical benchmark for every product we developed," Behnke says. Behnke notes that the goal of Juice Beauty is not only to exceed the quality and efficacy of other "natural" brands ("we know we can do that easily"), but also to meet "chemical" cosmetics in term of slip, feel and color payoff. Juice Beauty's products contain over 70 percent organic ingredients.

The first challenge was the expense. You need a lot of rose petals, aubergine and pomegranate in order to extract pigments. The other issue is color consistency. "In conventional brands you use artificial dye and you never have to worry it’s going to be the same color every time," Behnke explains. "But think about it: Every flower is different. Our chemists have to work so hard with color charts to get the same color every time." Getting products to "hold" without ingredients like petroleum (not eco-friendly) was another challenge. The mascara provided the biggest challenge, though, since the chemists were tasked with using pine resin and argan husks instead of coal tar, "animal glue," and keratin. Plus, "we had to work hard to find a brush that [Paltrow] and her makeup artist loved," Behnke says. (Behnke notes that it's like regular mascara, but the brand recommends applying one coat, letting it dry, then applying a second.)

The end result is a line of serum fluid foundations that provide some skin care benefits in 10 shades, liquid lipsticks, regular bullet lipsticks, lip gloss, blush, pressed powder, lip crayons, eye shadow sticks, eye pencils, concealers and even a range of makeup brushes. Prices range from $22 for an eye pencil to $42 for foundation. I tried an assortment of them. (Sadly, the mascara was not included but I will update if I get my hands on one.)

Behnke thinks that the serum foundations and liquid lipsticks are destined to be the brand's best sellers, so let's start there. The creamy liquid foundation goes on smoothly and buffs in well, but be aware that it provides pretty full coverage. I didn't use much, so I definitely wouldn't call it sheer and buildable. But if you like good coverage with minimum product, this is the foundation for you. The Illuminating Primer was also a pleasant surprise. I don't love the silicone-iness of many primers, but this one was soft and provided a bit of glow without making my face feel slippery like the floor of a bowling lane. (It contains coconut alkanes instead of dimethicone.) I've been wearing it alone with a bit of blush and concealer.

The lip products (I tried all except the gloss) were all home runs. The crayons are semi-sheer but buildable, and the Satin Lip Cream was no different in feel or color payoff than any number of conventional brands I've tried. The most impressive, though, was the Liquid Lip product. The formula was smooth and not tacky, the doe foot applicator applied product well, and most importantly, the color was rich and full coverage. After it dried, it mostly stayed on. True, it didn't have the insanely long wear that some liquid lipsticks have these days, but it also didn't dry my lips out at all. At the end of a long morning drinking coffee and water and making several phone calls, the color was still mostly there.

I had more of a problem with the powder products. I was sent a blush and two pressed powders, and all of them were cracked, one to smithereens. Now, full disclaimer, they were delivered to me in a paper bag by a messenger service, so for all I know, the messenger, my doorman or anyone in the chain of transportation could very well have smashed the bag on a wall or dropped it from a height or something. But they definitely seem more fragile and not as hearty as some conventional powder products. That said, I just stuck my brushes in there and proceeded as usual. The blush was subtle and buildable without being chalky. The powder spread well on my face and didn't settle into any lines. I would just recommend treating the compacts gently.

On a final note, if you like/are used to having all your makeup smell like flowers, vanilla, or fruit, you are in for a bit of a surprise here. Obviously Juice Beauty doesn't use any artificial fragrances or flavors, which is great, because those are often the source of allergic reactions. The products have an almost earthy smell to them. Not bad or offensive at all, but not pretty either. But if you're a longtime user of natural products, this likely won't bother you. (I think it's weird when makeup is too scented anyway, honestly.)

Behnke is optimistic about the future. "Juice Beauty is radically transforming the chemistry of beauty. We don't formulate like any other company does." I'm looking forward to trying more products and seeing future innovations in this quick-growing space.

The Golden Globes After Parties: See What Everyone Wore

From Emilia Clarke's dramatic, embellished Valentino Couture gown to Alicia Vikander's understated Louis Vuitton column dress, there were plenty of looks to keep us entertained at last night's 2016 Golden Globe Awards. But as any red carpet junkie knows, the after-parties are where the fun, often more risqué, dresses come out.

Take a look below at what celebrities from Kylie Jenner to Olivia Palermo wore to the after parties. As usual, there were a couple of hits – and misses. Enjoy!

The 6 Most Memorable Beauty Trends from the Golden Globes

While trying to predict the beauty looks that actresses would choose for the Golden Globes red carpet, we at Fashionista were hoping for either a) lots of runway-inspired glitter or b) a bunch of over-lined, matte lips à la Kylie Jenner. Neither happened, but we're not disappointed, because Sunday night proved to be one of the more interesting red carpets we've seen in a while. Several trends emerged, and many actresses even tried a few at once. We've rounded them all up below for easy browsing, and we're happy to report that a number of them seem easy enough to test out right at home.

Red Lips

One could pull a snarky Miranda Priestley and say, "Red lips? At an awards show? Groundbreaking." But red is obviously classic for a reason. This season, actresses chose textures ranging from semi-matte to creamy to lacquer-like gleaming for varied effect.

Strobing

One of the biggest beauty trends from last year clearly isn't going anywhere. Many actresses glowed with an inner beauty, yes, but also with a lot of highlighter.

Colorful Smoky Eyes That Match the Dress

The smoky eye is a red carpet staple, but actresses and their makeup artists took it to the next level at the Globes by matching the shadow to the dresses.

Half-Up Faux Bobs on People Named Kate (or Cate)

OK, so this trend is admittedly narrow. But what a coincidence, amirite?

Big Brows and Lashes

Sure, many women on the red carpet had great lashes or great brows. These three had a perfect combination of both.

Hair That Defies Trends or Categorization

There's a lot to be said for not doing what everyone else is doing (unlike Channing Tatum, who looked like a lot of different people), which is one of the reasons this red carpet was interesting. Here are five women who did their own thing.

The 'Pretty Little Liars' Jump Five Years Forward With a New Costume Designer

After six years of near-endless high school, the "Pretty Little Liars" — reformed mean girl Alison (Sasha Pieterse), artsy Aria (Lucy Hale), sporty Emily (Shay Mitchell), fashion girl Hanna (Ashley Benson) and preppy overachiever/prescription pills addict Spencer (Troian Bellisario) — finally went to prom and graduated. Instead of going the "Saved by the Bell: The College Years" route, Tuesday's "Pretty Little Liars" mid-season premiere will skip over that period into adulthood. As the Five Years Forward special in November teased, the time jump means updated story lines, an unfamiliar (maybe) nemesis, rotating love interests (Haleb, sob), a grown-up wardrobe transformation — and a brand new costume designer.

Mandi Line, responsible for Aria's feathered earrings, Hanna's booby funeral wear and all of their Disney-inspired prom dresses, exited after the mid-season finale. Now on board: Cameron Dale, who put Rachel Bilson in Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone as a hardened New Yorker-turned-Southern belle doctor in "Hart of Dixie." (Assistant costume designer Ivy Thaide handled the looks for the first two episodes of the midseason.)

While the Liars were embarking on their professional lives in different locales, a new undertaking involving the unmasked A/Charlotte/Charles/CeCe (Vanessa Ray) reunites them back in Rosewood. Each girl emerges with a new look that keeps her signature sense of style, but reflects her new stage in life. "[The actresses] were so excited," Dale says. "I think they're ready for a change and [to] mature up." While Hale, Benson, Mitchell, Bellisario and Pieterse were more than game for the wardrobe transitions, they did have one common request: to pare down the big statement accessories from their high school years. "I still throw those in here and there, but they were used sparingly," Dale says.

As "Pretty Little Liars" fans know all too well, high school did always offer opportunities for event episodes — be it a Halloween special, a formal school dance or that black and white '40s film Noir show from season four — that pushed the range of costume. "Don't worry, don't worry," assures Dale. "As an adult there are all kinds of events, too. Weddings, funerals... I can't say specifically, but don't worry, there will be no shortage of glamorous and non-glamorous big events coming up."

We'll let you marinate on that little bombshell teaser right there while Dale takes us through each character's new look below.

Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson)

While that interview with "the hottest designer in Philly" didn't work out for Hanna, she did graduate from FIT and interned with Zac Posen in New York City. This is Hollywood New York, of course, so Dale infused bright colors into Hanna's trendy outfits. The costume designer also took a New York fashion assistant's shopping strategy into consideration, shopping at Off Saks and Neiman Marcus at the SoCal outlets for designer pieces, including shiny Gucci coats, sleek ALC basics and even Louboutin heels. "You know, something that you'd think she'd steal from the fashion closet at work or [find at] sample sales," Dale explains. But it seems that the TV-version of Zac Posen didn't offer employee discounts, as Hanna won't be wearing the label this season. "No," laughs Dale. "She totally should though. I gotta give Zac a call."

Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale)

Writer-turned-photographer Aria is now working at a Boston publishing house, which brings her back in touch with ex-teacher/boyfriend Fitz. (Ironically, now that the two can can legally date, she's moved onto her co-worker. Oh, Aria.) While she's aged out of feather earrings and pink streaks in her hair, Aria's not giving up the prints. "She has toned herself down a little bit, believe it or not," says Dale. "She's still mixing and matching patterns, but everything is a little bit more mature." Dale looked to Topshop and Nasty Gal, which perfectly fit Hale's petite frame, plus denim by Seven and Amo for those out-of-office moments in Rosewood. "I still do a little vintage for her, which is really fun," adds Dale, who conveniently sourced the retro stock in the Warner Bros. costume warehouse.

Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario)

For Georgetown grad-turned-budding lobbyist Spencer, Dale looked to another Washington, D.C. power player's wardrobe for inspiration. "We were kind of going 'House of Cards' with her," she says. Even as a "glorified coffee-gofer," Spencer wears pretty refined pieces, including pencil skirts and "tight wiggle dresses" by Roksanda Ilincic, Rag & Bone and other designers shopped for on The Outnet. Although, "Troian would love to just be in skinny jeans, Converse and sweaters, so we did a lot of that," Dale adds.

Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell)

After all the trauma with A, post-high-school life hasn't turned out much better for Emily. Her father died, she dropped out of Pomona and is now bartending somewhere in Southern California — and she apparently has a big secret to hide. "She's kind of stunted — she hasn't really moved on that much — and she's kind of lost in life, so her style is really similar," explains Dale. "I just have incorporated a bit more of a California beach-y vibe to it." Appropriately, Emily wears pieces by celeb favorite Wildfox Couture, plus Rag & Bone boots and "a lot of denim" by Current/Elliott. If you're one of Mitchell's nearly 10 million Instagram followers, you'll know that she's actually more of a Hanna in real life. "Shay is so different from Emily," Dale laughs. "She's such a glamazon. We were fitting her and Ashley [Benson] on the same day and [Mitchell] saw the Louboutins, she was just like, 'argh, Emily, come on!'"

Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse)

Former maybe-A and definite mean girl Alison was the one who stayed at home while her friends went away to college. Now it's come full circle as she's a teacher at Rosewood High School and wife to her psycho sister's doctor. When Dale took on the job, she had to quickly binge-watch five seasons to catch up – and out of order. "I was surprised how mean she was in the beginning," the costume designer says. "Alison really had a transformation. She's so sweet." Dale wanted to reflect that character evolution in Alison's wardrobe with "Hart of Dixie"-esque knee-length and long flowing skirts, floral prints and cardigan twinsets. "Things that are appropriate for school, but are obviously elevated for TV," she explains. "None of my teachers dressed like Alison. And I don't think lobbyists dress like Spencer, either, but it's OK. We're a little fantasy, which is always fun."

"Pretty Little Liars" midseason premiere airs at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12 on Freeform (formerly ABC Family).

This article was updated to reflect assistant costume designer Ivy Thaide's involvement in the beginning of the midseason, which we were not made aware of until after the article was published.
