Pamela Anderson: ’90s Sex Symbol, Eternal Friend to the Animals.
On Friday, the former Baywatch babe was honored for her tireless efforts to end animal cruelty when she was named People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) 2010 Person of the Year. The announcement comes on the heels of reports that a second PETA PSA starring Anderson has been banned from airports in a number of US cities.
Pam shares the prize with former president Bill Clinton, who is being praised for his support of veganism.
“For years, Anderson has been penning letters and posing in ads for PETA U.K.’s American affiliate in order to raise awareness of cruelty to animals and demonstrate how easy it is to avoid contributing to animal suffering,” a spokeperson for the often-controversial animal rights organization said of PETA’s decision to honor Anderson.
Pam worked to bring attention to animal rights issues by speaking to students at Britain’s prestigious Oxford University, posing for pictures with her body painted in butcher markings, and filming a TV commercial in which she strip-searches plane passengers for hidden furs and pelts.
Both ads were later banned.
The vegetarian actress/model, a native of Canada, even hosted a pet adoption drive and called on Indian leaders to ban the country’s “unspeakably cruel” leather trade.
