Rihanna is a Bajan Rhythm and Blues singer and songwriter of Guyanese and Irish descent. She is best known for hit songs Pon de Replay, SOS, and Unfaithful.



Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born on February 18, 1988 in St. Michael, Barbados. Rihanna was born on the Caribbean island of Barbados. Her father, Ronald Fenty is a biracial Bajan of Irish descent and her mother Monica is of Guyanese descent. She has two younger brothers. She did her schooling from Charles F. Broome Memorial School (a primary school) and the Combermere School (a secondary school). While at school, she and two of her classmates formed a musical trio. She became the Miss Combermere in 2004 and also performed Mariah Carey’s Hero in the Colours of Combermere School Show.


Rihanna got her big break when a friend introduced her to music producer Evan Rogers, who was in Barbados on a vacation with his wife. She then went on to record a demo tape in the US with the help of Rogers and his partner, Carl Sturken. The demo tape was then sent to various companies, including Jay-Z, who went on to sign her to his record label Island Def Jam Records.


In August 2005, she released her debut album Music Of The Sun. The first single from the album was Pon De Replay, which made it to No. 2 on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. The second song, If It’s Lovin’ That You Want was not as successful as the first but reached No.36 on US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 11 on the UK Singles Chart. The album was certified gold and made it to the top ten in Canada and the US, and the top forty in the UK. She next went on a tour with singer Gwen Stefani as an opening act.


In April 2006, Rihanna released her second album, A Girl Like Me. The lead song, SOS topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart and made it to No. 1 in Australia and No. 2 in the UK. The second song, Unfaithful is a slow ballad written by singer Ne-Yo and made it to the top ten in US and UK. Other songs from the album include We Ride and Break It Off featuring Sean Paul.


That year in 2006, she also landed several endorsement contracts for companies like Nike and J.C. Penney. The song SOS was used in an advertisement for Nike.


Rihanna made her film debut with a cameo role in Bring It On: All or Nothing (2006). She also appeared on television in the soap opera All My Children and the drama Las Vegas.
