Michael Scott’s handing in his Walking Papers a little early. On Friday, producers confirmed that funny guy Steve Carell depart his hit NBC comedy The Office four episodes ahead of schedule — several weeks before the scheduled seventh season finale in May.
That means Steve’s farewell episode will likely air in April.
Last summer, Carell shocked TV fans when he announced that he’s departing his role as the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company boss he’s played since 2005 — a part based on Ricky Gervais’ turn on the original British version of the show.
The final episodes of the season will focus on the scrambling to replace Scott at the Scranton branch of the fictional paper company, says Office executive producer Paul Lieberstein.
“Steve will have a number of episodes that dramatize and lead up to Steve leaving. Then we’ll continue on for about four more episodes, and the spring will prove to be not about an actor leaving, but what happens in an office when a manager leaves and the chaos ensues and people vie for the job and are uncertain about their future,” he told New York Magazine’s Vulture Blog this week.
Series producers have not revealed who will replace Carell when The Office returns for an eighth season in the fall.
