Spoilers.
So far, season five of "Downton Abbey" has been a wonderful mix of forbidden sexual encounters (looking at you, Lady Mary), amazing outerwear and YouTube tutorial-worthy hair. Episode three also did not disappoint in these areas, and watching the Dowager Countess blush her way through an encounter with a princely admirer from the past was priceless. Everyone seemed to be flirting, and they dressed to the nines to do so.
Before we get to that, let's check in on Lady Mary and Lord Gillingham's secret rendezvous.
Lady Mary's JBF Hair
Have we ever seen Lady Mary with anything other than perfectly coiffed daytime hair or sedately braided night hair? I don't think so, so seeing her with JBF (literally) hair is kind of making me giddy. See also: cleavage!
Post-Coital Shawl/Hat
Speaking of JBF hair, is Lady Mary actually capable of doing her own hair? Maybe that's why she decided to wear a hat. Unrelated, I love this post-coital shawl that Mary tossed on to answer the door and carry(!!) her own breakfast tray.
Sailor Suits
Now back in the proper and non-sexy bosom of the Abbey, Lady Mary and her mom decided to don matching sailor-inspired outfits. (Fashion history lesson: Sailor-inspired tops were adopted from midshipman's uniforms, and were called "middys." The shape was usually a daytime, sportswear look.)
Edith's Hair Tie
Poor Lady Edith cannot catch a break, but at least she's not too sad to choose cute hair accessories.
Rose's Underrated Brows
I hate the "f" word (rhymes with "eek" ) as it relates to brows so I won't utter it here, but really, Lady Rose's eyebrows are pretty magnificent. Also, she should wear more jewel tones instead of pastels all the time.
Creamy
All the Downton ladies decided to wear creamy tops on the same day for some reason. To match their creamy complexions?
Lady Grantham Gets Out of the House
Watch out for those artsy types, Lady G. They are no good. I never would have considered sage and spice a good color combination, but I'm reconsidering it now. Lady Grantham has never looked better, and all the gentlemen are obviously noticing.
Mary's Barrette Game
She wore a clip and a comb, which both matched her brunette hair and provided a bit of texture. Lady Mary can't ever be too flashy, although I wish she would borrow a more whimsical piece from Lady Rose once in a while.
The Russians
Guys at Pitti Uomo or Russian refugees? Either way, I love the shearling here. (And that's the Dowager Countess's admirer on the far left. Dashing!)
Blushing Violet?
Mrs. Crawley, dressed in head-to-toe steel blue velvet, gets in a few well-deserved jabs at the Dowager Countess about her long-ago Russian admirer. Here's hoping for a hookup in a future episode.
