Following his couture debut for Maison Margiela in January, John Galliano held his first ready-to-wear show for the house on Friday in Paris. In true Galliano fashion, the runway was rife with drama: The models' hair was wild and unkempt (a few even wore choppy, brightly colored wigs) and their faces were painted with clown-like makeup. To make things even more theatrical, a handful of the girls stormed down the runway — some hunched over, some with arms crossed and one clutching a paper bag-like purse to her chest. Were they witches? Street urchins? Your guess is as good as ours. Videos of the moment instantly lit up social media (as you can see below).
Aside from the requisite element of Galliano madness, there were a number of pieces in the collection — long, luxurious coats, velvet suiting pieces — that had plenty of commercial appeal. According to Twitter, Galliano didn't come out after the finale to take a bow (although he did after the Margiela couture show in January), but considering the buzz the show's received thus far, the industry at large is happy to have him back.
