On Tuesday at the Conciergerie in Paris — a former prison where Marie Antoinette famously spent her last days before being executed — Sarah Burton presented her haunting, Victorian-inspired fall collection for Alexander McQueen. Never short on elements of dark romance, Burton sent her models down the runway with heavily powdered, almost ghost-like face makeup and unkempt bouffants — with hollowed-out eyes and ombré red lips that made the ladies look like they had just taken a bite of flesh. The beauty look fit with the clothes, pieces reminiscent of 18th century wares. There were the high-necked collars, ruffles and tapestry-like fabrics that have been so popular this season, along with a rose motif, delicate lace and intricate embroideries that gave it an ethereal (if not slightly nightmarish) quality.

The fall show comes at an important time in the McQueen legacy — the record-breaking exhibit "Savage Beauty" arrives in the UK next week, on March 14 — and while Burton has gradually put her stamp on the house since she took the creative lead back in 2010, we've enjoyed watching her keep the late legend's spirit alive.
