In fashion, designers are constantly inspiring one another — and the high street, too. But where does inspiration end and intellectual property infringement (i.e. copying) begin? That's something we're exploring in our long-running series, "Adventures in Copyright."
Alexander Wang's spring 2015 collection was a fan favorite. Inspired by fanatical sneaker culture, Wang touched upon some of the most generation-defining urban footwear trends — from Air Jordans to Stan Smiths — which is what made his spring show a particularly memorable one. Unfortunately, that also made it an easy target for imitations.
Nasty Gal is notorious for knocking off both established and indie designers each season, but this recently released knit dress immediately caught our eye for its obvious similarities to Wang's Flyknit-inspired bodycon dresses from spring '15. The retailer's website highlights its "technical fabrics" and "activewear silhouette," but it should probably cite the New York-based designer as its real inspiration, don't you think?
