Part of the fun of the Metropolitan Museum's annual Costume Institute Gala — in recent years, at least — is peeking in on the action via celebrities' and industry insiders' Instagram accounts. Unfortunately for us, this year's edition of the Met Gala will be a social media-free zone, so we'll just have to use our imaginations to envision what's going on inside the venue once the attendees exit the red carpet.
As first reported by Page Six, the use of all cell phones for photography and social media are banned from the event, which is overseen by Vogue's Anna Wintour. A source familiar with the Met Gala's plans confirmed to Fashionista that this regulation will in fact be enforced, and is meant to help ensure the security and enjoyment of the high-profile guests in attendance.
While we're disappointed about the new rule, we're not exactly surprised, as a few of last year's posts from the party went viral — and were a little sloppy. The most memorable of these came from Cara Delevingne, who filmed a very drunk Reese Witherspoon and Zooey Deschanel in an elevator at the venue, and while the resulting footage was hilarious, it was basically a movie star's PR nightmare.
While real-time social media will be limited, we're sure that stars will roll out plenty of selfies in the days following the event, which we're already looking forward to. Whether or not elevator cameras at after-parties have also been banned remains to be seen. Sorry, Jay Z.
