Joe Nichols Hints at Album of Folk Songs

Joe Nichols Hints at Album of Folk Songs:

Joe Nichols may be a country traditionalist with a modern flair, but more often than not, he's listening to folk music in his truck. And the "Freaks Like Me" singer says he may be rerecording a few of those classic folk tunes for a future album.

"I never really grew up on [folk music], but I like the writing of it," he tells Rolling Stone Country. "Hopefully one of these days, for some of those songs, we can make them a little country and put out a record of that stuff."

Nichols cites the folkier songwriting of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and the Band as being particularly inspiring.

"I think as country has evolved, the storytelling has gone away a little bit," Nichols says. "It's become more of a production, and more of a 'let's be loud and have a party' kind of thing. Storytelling attracts me. That's where the most value for your buck is for me."

But before any folk-inspired album happens, Nichols is gearing up for a new LP of original material in the first quarter of 2016. In September, he released "Freaks Like Me," the lead single to his ninth studio album and says the project will be similar to that song.

Says Nichols: "It's got a lot of high tempo stuff, but it's my country bumpkin butt singing on it, so it won't sound much different than 'Freaks Like Me.'"
