If you were thinking about dressing up as the Duchess of Cambridge for Halloween, the look she wore Tuesday evening would be a good one to imitate.

For a lavish state banquet to honor President Xi Jinping of China at Buckingham Palace, the Duchess (aka Kate Middleton) chose a lovely red Jenny Packham gown with glittering embellishments and, more importantly, the sparkling Lotus Flower tiara  — previous owners of which include the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret. While the red dress is a new addition to her wardrobe — and the color a respectful nod to Chinese culture — she did wear the tiara two years ago at a reception for diplomats at Buckingham Palace. This is still a big deal though, because that means that, including her wedding, this is only the third time Middleton has publicly worn a tiara, something she could do every single day if she really wanted to.

Of course, doing so would be pretty off-brand for the modern, minimalist princess. She may have even felt a little silly wearing one for this occasion — until she saw her mother-in-law's much more ornate headpiece, that is.
