Following their wedding in August last year, the newlyweds decided to combine their honeymoon in Malta with filming the heart-wrenching drama about a couple at war.

Angelina admits that in hindsight it was a questionable decision.

She told the Telegraph: 'There were a few days when we thought [a working honeymoon] wasn't the best idea. There were days during filming last year when we were really worried and it was hard.'

The couple originally found love on the set of Mr And Mrs Smith, where they played a husband and wife working as assassins - and when Brad was still married to Jennifer Aniston.

The couple star alongside one another as a quarrelling husband and wife in Angelina's latest directing feat, By The Sea, but the actress says the plot is not based on their marriage

However the actress says that ten years on the filming process wasn't quite as romantic.

She continued: 'When we first worked together it was very different because we didn't really know each other and we were young and, it was really a fun film, so we thought, maybe By The Sea was going to be that kind of fun, but realised very quickly that it wasn't.'

Despite the film focusing on a quarrelling couple and starring the Jolie-Pitts, Angelina says that in no way is it based on their marriage.

'Brad and I have our issues, but if the characters were even remotely close to our problems we couldn't have made the film,' she said. 'To be clear: we have fights and problems like any other couple.

'We have days when we drive each other absolutely mad and want space, but the problems in the movie aren't our specific problems.'

The film - set in the 1970s - revolves around Roland and Vanessa, a couple struggling to keep their marriage together.

The pair originally met on the set of Mr And Mrs Smith in 2005 but Angelina says their latest film was a completely different experience

Angelina recently said of the project, in an interview with Today: 'We were joking... We were saying, like... "See, this is the beginning. And then this is ten years later. This is what ten years of marriage will do to you".'

During the TV interview, Brad revealed his admiration for his wife following her decision to have a double mastectomy and her ovaries removed. It was a preventative measure after genetic tests revealed she had a high risk of getting cancer.

'There was no vanity to my wife's approach,' the Fight Club star said. 'It was mature.'

Highlighting her bravery and selflessness, he said: 'There was a strength in that. It was just another one of those things in life that makes you tighter and she was doing it for the kids, and she was doing it for her family so we could be together.'

By The Sea will be released in the US on November 13 and the UK on December 11.
