Chanel Staged A Feminist March for Its Spring Show

There's been a lot of talk about fashion and feminism lately. Are feminists “allowed” to like fashion? Can fashion be feminist? These are not new questions, but ones that come to the forefront every decade or so. Nonetheless, Karl Lagerfeld answered them with a resounding "yes" this morning: His band of celebrity models parading down “Boulevard Chanel” — constructed within the Grand Palais — holding signs scribbled with phrases like, “Be Your Own Stylist,” “Ladies First,” “Free Freedom” and “Make Fashion Not War.”

There is little doubt that fashion can be political. But the message today seemed to be more personal than that. Many of the models — who wore seventies-tinged looks, in tandem with an era when women were arguably more open ardent about their feminism — were put in pairs, chatting as they walked down the runway-cum-boulevard. There was a power in Gisele’s stripe-knit sweater, in Kendall’s leather-strip dress, a pink suede leisure suit, or a gold leather bomber. But it was the power of sticking together that seemed to be the big idea.

Since 2012, Swedish retail giant H&M has championed young design talent through its Annual Design award: A €50,000 cash prize for a jury-chosen fashion student, as well as a chance for the winner to present his or her collection at Mercedes-Benz Stockholm Fashion Week. As if this career boost isn't enough on its own, the winning designer has the opportunity to produce key pieces from his or her runway show into a capsule collection to be sold globally at H&M stores and online.

The retailer has just announced that the 2014 Design Award winner, 24-year-old Eddy Anemian, has created a 10-piece collection that will arrive at H&M globally on October 23. Anemian, a student at La Cambre School in Brussels, Belgium, was hand-picked for the prestigious award by a jury of industry bigwigs that included designer Erdem Moralioglu, "Downton Abbey" star (and red carpet mainstay) Michelle Dockery and H&M Creative Advisor Margareta van den Bosch. His designs are meticulously constructed into interesting shapes and textures, and his graphic, floral prints are sure to appeal to the street style set. Anemian's collection for the retailer will range in price from $29.95 to $349.

Click through the gallery below to see pieces from Anemian's collection, and get to know his name: we have a feeling big things are coming for this young talent.

Valentino's Spring Collection Is Very Pretty, But Not Too Sweet

Valentino's Spring Collection Is Very Pretty, But Not Too Sweet:

After a month of shows, I feel comfortable declaring that there is something quite casual happening for spring. It's not about athletic casual -- although that idea hasn't disappeared altogether -- but instead about applying humble fabrics and silhouettes to fancy wares. Denim in particular has played a significant role on the runway, and most notably in collections where it mightn't have belonged in the past.

Valentino Creative Directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, who have a distinctive way of modernizing formal dressing, showed multiple looks in what looked like denim, including an oversize Peter Pan collar jacket, wide-leg cropped flares and high-waisted shorts. Often worn with flat sandals, these were utilitarian clothes re-imagined for leisure wear. Chiuri and Piccioli were specifically thinking about the Grand Tour, a trip 18-century male British students would take through Europe after graduating from university, so the looks were meant to coincide with a travel itinerary through Italy. (For instance, seaside-inspired gowns were embroidered with starfish and seashells.) But the initial reference point only served as a guide, not a dictation. The big takeaway was that frilly, feminine dresses -- ruffles and all -- don't need to be sickly sweet. A series of pastel-rainbow looks were unapologetically pretty, which also made them unexpectedly cool. Which is sort of Valentino's M.O. these days.

A.P.C.'s salon-style presentations are a Paris Fashion Week highlight, thanks to founder Jean Touitou's endless string of oh-so-wise one-liners. This season, Touitou spoke about moving beyond simplicity into the sublime. "Fashion is born from the need for change," he said. "My work has always been about simplicity. But after hanging out with hip hop artists, I decided not to be so humble anymore." (Thanks for that, Kanye.) For spring, the designer showed a lineup of refined trenches, railroad-stripe denim and dusty-colored pleated skirts, jumpsuits and blouses that were quite sexy-- but never crass. These clothes -- still utilitarian in their function -- had a polish that elevated the overall look. Sublime indeed. -- Lauren Sherman
