Another day and another celebrity steps up to prove they’re an animal lover/champion of animal rights.
‘Tik Tok’ singer Kesha is fronting a new anti-seal hunting campaign for (who else?) PETA.
The pop star has agreed to feature in a new advert with a baby seal in a bid to highlight the annual slaughter of seal pups less than a month old in Canada.
The advertisement is emblazoned with the slogan “Canada’s Club Scene Sucks”, (clever right?) and the animal rights organization is planning to display posters of it at various music festivals and at Kesha’s concerts to raise awareness of the practice and hopefully persuade a host of teenagers to write letters to the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper asking for seal clubbing to be banned.
Revealing why she got involved in the project, the 24-year-old pop star said: “I was lucky enough to get to watch a bunch of wild seals recently and truly fell in love with these amazing creatures.
“Canada gets to be host to harp seals each year during their migration to the ice to give birth which is beautiful and peaceful. But because the babies’ fur is so soft, there are people who club and brutally kill these young animals. The Canadian seal slaughter is barbaric and archaic.”
Regardless of what questions you might have about Kesha’s motives, killing baby seals for their fur does seem pretty barbaric in the 21st century, however, whether an eccentric dressing pop musician who sings about being turned on by transvestite men (‘Take It Off’ in case you didn’t know) can stop something that has gone one for hundreds of years we’re not so sure.
