You Won’t Believe How Long it Took to Create Cara Delevingne’s Met Gala Tattoos

You Won’t Believe How Long it Took to Create Cara Delevingne’s Met Gala Tattoos:

The Met Gala  isn’t typically known for its beauty looks — floor-sweeping gown, near-naked dresses and massive headpieces tend to eclipse the makeup and hairstyles on display — but last night Cara Delevingne gave us reason to pause and stare.

In line with the gala’s Far East theme, the “Suicide Squad” actress hit the carpet with some serious (temporary) tattoos covering her arms, chest, and neck.  The designs were a smattering of Chinese fans, birds and delicate blossoms, courtesy of famed celebrity tattoo artist Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy.  Fans of Bang Bang’s work, which includes Rihanna’s many famous tattoos, will recognize him as the mastermind behind Cara’s lion finger tattoo — as well as about a dozen more of her famous tatts.  But for last night’s ink fest, Cara had something special in mind.

“It was actually Cara’s idea to create a custom tattoo for the Met Gala,” he told Style.com. “She asked me to design it last Wednesday, so the deadline was tight, but my motto is to always say yes. I created stencils that were applied to Cara’s body until they were about 95 percent dry for guidelines, then filled the rest in freehand with markers. It took about 11 hours in total.”  The designs will reportedly stay on for about ten days.

While head-to-toe body art may not be the first thing that comes to mind when we think of the Met Gala, Cara’s innovative take on traditional Chinese iconography proved equal parts edgy and sophisticated — not to mention totally on brand for the event.

“I wanted to do something that added to Cara’s look without stealing the show,” McCurdy added. “The Met Gala is a big stage to bring tattoos to and I wanted to do something that worked.”
