Dakota Johnson and Patricia Arquette Win For 'Most Realistic Post-Gym Hair' at the Oscars

Ah, the Oscars. Glittering jewels, princess dresses, barrel curls and updos hiding innumerable hairpins.

Or, sometimes not. Dakota Johnson and Patricia Arquette both showed up to the Academy Awards with remarkably low-key hair looks. Not just low-key, but stunningly reminiscent of what your hair looks like after sweating it out at the gym.

On the Johnson side of things, we have a languid (limp) ponytail not unlike what you might see bobbing next to you on an elliptical. Meanwhile, Arquette's flyaways and tufted little nub at the back are exactly what Cheryl says her short, blonde hair looks like after kickboxing class. I'll second that — buns can get really feathery if your hair is on the shorter side.

This isn't to throw shade on either of them, though. While we love to see the magic that stylists are able to create with a head of hair, it's also really nice to see celebrities doing something ultra-normal. These are two looks we can genuinely say that you can easily get at home.

But we want to know what you think: who wore formal gym hair best?

An Ode to John Travolta's Man Choker at the Oscars

An Ode to John Travolta's Man Choker at the Oscars:

Winter 2014 may have been all about the man-bun, but this year, we're calling out another masculine #menswear accessory: The chain choker necklace, which made its bold debut Sunday evening at the Oscars.

OK, so maybe John Travolta was the only guy brave enough to sport one -- but all trends have to start somewhere, right? The "Grease" star and lace-front wig enthusiast, who presented the award for Best Original Song alongside Adele Dazeem -- I mean, Idina Menzel -- chose to decorate his throat region with a large piece of jewelry resembling a thick, shiny choke collar.

Just LOOK AT THIS THING. It's original. It's outlandish. It's not just another bow tie. It's '90s in a way that we never could have anticipated or imagined. It is a thing of beauty.

Man chokers for all!

Awards season flew by this year, didn't it? When it came time for Hollywood's most glamorous night, we'd almost forgotten that everyone was going to dramatically step up their red carpet game, having clearly saved the best for last.

While we would have appreciated a little more risk-taking, we still had a hard time narrowing down the looks for our top ten best dressed list. Here's what did stand out: shimmery citrus tones on Emma Stone and Nicole Kidman, stunning plus ones like Joanna Newsom and Hannah Bagshawe and luxe textures like Rosamund Pike's floral embroidery and Lupita Nyong'o's unbelievable pearl gown.

See the gallery for the best dressed ladies at the 87th Annual Academy Awards, and let us know who we missed in the comments below.

Dakota Johnson has never been one for sartorial excitement, but this Saint Laurent red gown is simply perfect for the occasion. It's body conscious yet flattering, bold but easy. Margot Robbie can sometimes veer in the direction of tacky — and this pose veers in the direction of annoying — but the combination of this Saint Laurent gown's long sleeves and plunging neckline with a distinctive statement necklace just works. We expected a major red carpet moment from Lupita Nyong'o at the Oscars, especially after a few lackluster looks at recent award shows, and she totally delivered. Is there anything Emma Stone can't pull off? The wasabi green color of this Elie Saab dress would be an unfortunate choice for many a young starlet, but against Emma's pale skin and reddish auburn hair, it looks stunning. The long sleeves balance out the more fun and sexy open back and the thigh slit, and the matching the matching green heels are the cherry on top. Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images2 of 10

Pictures don't do justice to Peter Copping's first red carpet dress for Oscar de la Renta, as worn by Sienna Miller. Sunday night's Oscars proceedings got a little slow, so in between waiting for Gaga's amazingly good Sound of Music tribute and hoping for shots of Wes Anderson (<3), I started taking a good, hard look at all the hair trends. We've already covered the semi-weird yet fantastic athleisure red carpet hair trend, but there were a lot of other things to talk about.

Updos Are Back

Photos: Frazer Harrison, Lester Cohen, and Kevin Mazur/Getty Images
Photos: Frazer Harrison, Lester Cohen, and Kevin Mazur/Getty Images
Yes, yes, I know that updos haven't really gone anywhere. HOWEVER, they were much more prevalent at the Oscars than they've been during this awards season, and they popped up on actresses of all ages. (But sadly not on Jared Leto.) Here, Anna Kendrick, Zoe Saldana and Julianne Moore show us intricate, messy, and sleek 'n' low.

Don't Believe the Updo Hype? Here Are More

Photos: Frazer Harrison (first three) and Ethan Miller/Getty Images

This slide highlights the fact that you can do an updo regardless of your hair length (see: Sienna Miller and Rosamund Pike, center). It also proves that you can make blunt bangs look formal (Felicity Jones, left) and that Cate Blanchett looks good no matter what you do to her.

The Chanteuse Short Cut

Photos: Frazer Harrison (first two) and Jason Merritt/Getty Images Photos: Frazer Harrison (first two) and Jason Merritt/Getty Images
I'm going to go ahead and credit Julie Andrews with these singing ladies' short cuts, though her presence at the Oscars last night probably had nothing to do with it. Here, Jennifer Hudson, Rita Ora and Faith Hill all took it short and sleek. (Also notable: According to Google, Hill's hairstyle was the most-searched red carpet hairstyle last night. Huh.)

Looks That Defy Categorization

Photos: Frazer Harrison, Jason Merritt, Lester Cohen/Getty Images
Photos: Frazer Harrison, Jason Merritt, Lester Cohen/Getty Images
For these three, it was less about the hair -- though that was a major contributing factor -- and more about the magical quality of the total look. Margot Robbie was perfection personified from the straight bob to that orangey red lip, which is Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Raven. Emma Stone's half-up faux bob is a work of art, and Zendaya's glorious head of long dreads stole the red carpet, in my opinion.

The Fashion Middle Part

Kudos to Eliza for picking up on this one. Leave it to the fashion people -- hi, Behati Prinsloo and Georgina Chapman -- to make a severe, slick middle part updo look amazing.

Jennifer Aniston Hair

Photos: Steve Granitz, Frazer Harrison, Jason Merritt/Getty Images Photos: Steve Granitz, Frazer Harrison, Jason Merritt/Getty Images
This proves that everyone wants Jennifer Aniston's slightly boring yet admittedly attractive hair, including Chloe Grace Moretz and Kerry Washington.

Fancy Lady Hair

Photos: Steve Granitz and Kevin Mazur (last two)/Getty Images
Only the fanciest of red carpet dwellers can pull off hair this long and luxurious and perfect, particularly in light of Sunday's drizzly weather. Jessica Chastain, Reese Witherspoon, and Gwyneth Paltrow -- arguably the fanciest of them all -- nailed it.

Hair Twinsies We Never Saw Coming

Photos: Steve Granitz and Greg DeGuire/Getty Images Photos: Steve Granitz and Greg DeGuire/Getty Images
Never thought I'd be comparing Scarlett Johansson and Kelly Osbourne, but it just happened. Who wore it better? Who's going to swear the most while growing this cut out? My money is on ScarJo.

Pregnant Goddess

Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images
Keira Knightley deserves her own category for this. I don't know if it's the pregnancy hormones, the prenatal vitamins, or her natural hair magic, but this look makes me want to get pregnant so I can attempt to channel it.

J. Mendel Is Exploring Outside Investments

Are changes ahead at J. Mendel? WWD reported Monday morning that less than five years after The Gores Group invested in the New York-based furrier and red carpet staple, the private equity firm may be looking to sell off its majority stake.

Whether that rumor turns out to be true remains to be seen. A rep for Gores Group did not immediately respond to request for comment, but J. Mendel did confirm to Fashionista that it is considering taking on outside investments at this time.

"J. Mendel and The Gores Group see significant global growth opportunities for the brand, which will require both capital and international partners," J. Mendel CEO Marc Durie said in a statement. "Having received several enquiries from outside parties, we are considering our options under the advice of BDA Partners and Vendome Global Partners.”

Sources for WWD say that Gores Group — which also counts a laser manufacturer, a communications software business and a UK-based bread maker among its portfolio companies — didn't invest enough capital into J. Mendel after acquiring it in August 2010 to grow it significantly. Born as a fur boutique in 1870s St. Petersburg, the brand has since expanded into ready-t0-wear, accessories and bridal. Within these existing businesses alone, there's undoubtedly room for growth.

We'll be watching to see what emerges from this — whether The Gores Group does indeed sell off its stake or whether J. Mendel simply brings on board another investor.

Update: This article has been updated with comment from J. Mendel.

Christopher Bailey Brings a '70s Boho Spirit to Burberry for Fall

Burberry drew the curtains around its glass-paneled show space in Hyde Park Monday afternoon, lending a lounge-like coziness to the runway spectacle. Like many designers this and last season, Creative Director Christopher Bailey has been infected by the '70s boho spirit, manifested here in quilt-inspired patchwork, floral and paisley prints, and fringed suede coats in a palette of indigo, burgundy, teal, yellow ochre and natural brown. Sharp tailoring on coats and long dresses and expertly crafted details -- whipstitching on a patchwork suede coat, round mirror embellishments on tapestry prints -- elevated the formality and beauty of the garments. Ponchos and capes were big business for Burberry this fall and made frequent appearances on the runway, including the opening look. Several, in addition to a long fringed scarf, bucket bag and nail polishes, were available for purchase online immediately after the show.

As always, showgoers' attentions were divided between the runway and the front row, which included Kate Moss, Mario Testino, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn, Paloma Faith and Clemence Poesy. Conspicuously missing pre-show was this season's Burberry campaign star, Naomi Campbell, who made it into her seat (looking pretty fabulous in a shaggy white jacket and pencil skirt) seven minutes in. For the finale, disco lights bounced off walls and silver tinsel rained from the ceiling as Clare Maguire hit the final notes of her four-song arrangement -- as always, it was magical.

While Hollywood's best and brightest kept it safe and classy on the red carpet for the Academy Awards ceremony, they went a little crazy -- well, sartorially, anyway -- at the after parties. From Emma Stone's ripped-from-the-fall 2015 runway, gold-flecked Altuzarra to Diane Kruger's Donna Karan Atelier dress/cape/jumpsuit hybrid to Gigi Hadid's two super-leggy Versace Couture gowns, stars' after party looks were much more interesting, and much more naked. It's as if most of Hollywood collectively decided to forgo undergarments for the evening.

Jennifer Lawrence Smizes in New Dior Ad, Karlie Kloss Is Indeed Leaving Victoria's Secret

Jennifer Lawrence Smizes in New Dior Ad, Karlie Kloss Is Indeed Leaving Victoria's Secret:

Tyra would be proud. Photo: Paolo Roversi Tyra would be proud. Photo: Paolo Roversi
Jennifer Lawrence takes a break from androgyny for her newest Dior campaign, this time for the Be Dior handbag, photographed by Paolo Roversi. On Thursday, Dior will be releasing an accompanying clip of the A-list actress, who has been the face of the brand since 2013. Stay tuned for that. {WWD}

After unconfirmed reports surfaced last week that Karlie Kloss would be clipping her Victoria's Secret Angel wings, the lingerie giant confirmed Monday that Kloss has indeed decided to leave at the end of her contract to focus on other commitments. "Karlie Kloss will always be an angel to me," reads an Instagram caption by Ed Razek, chief marketing officer of Creative Services of Limited Brands, Victoria Secret's parent. {Instagram via People}

In case you missed it, Tom Ford put on a pretty mesmerizing fashion show (complete with falling "snow" petals) just days before the Oscars. See what the designer has to say about thinking globally and choosing L.A. as the location of his fall 2015 runway show in this short film by Fabien Constant. {CR Fashion Book}

Icelandic star Björk looks effortlessly cool for the spring/summer 2015 cover of The Gentlewoman. While she may not be wearing her beloved swan dress, we're happy to report that she's sporting a rather fabulous plexiglass and sequin hat by Stephen Jones for Emanuel Ungaro in the editorial. {The Gentlewoman}

Despite some standout collections, certain retailers and buyers were left feeling a bit disappointed by New York Fashion Week. Ken Downing, senior vice president and creative director of Neiman Marcus, wanted to see more cohesion on the runways, while Beth Buccini, cofounder of Kirna Zabête, expressed a desire for American designers to "work a little harder to find their own voice." {WWD}

Across the pond, the British Fashion Council and British Council handed out honors to the emerging designers and cultural institutes who showed as part of the International Fashion Showcase this weekend. The award for Best Designer went to Finland-born, Columbia-raised Julia Mannisto, while the award for Best Exhibition went to Columbia. {WWD}
